I think your IDE controller is loose or damaged! If the HDD is ok the failure can only be at the IDE Controller and this controller is at the mainboard!
Furthermore this massage occurs if both devices HDD and CD/DVD drive are set to master or slave.
I know that the HDD is always set to master and the CD/DVD to slave. But if you use a wrong or not compatible drive the OS gives error.
