Portege R930 - How to turn off wireless?
Posted: 06-Aug-2013 17:38

Hi,

How do you turn off wireless communications when you are in an aircraft?
On my previous R600, there was a switch on the right side. But I can't find any switch on the R930.
There is FN F8 to switch on Wireless access, but there is no FN to switch off.

Did I miss something? Thanks.

According users manuals you must use FN+F8 key combination to enable or disable WLAN (Airplane mode on/off). When small airplane symbol is shown on the taskbar the WLAN will be OFF. At the same time WLAN LED at the front side will be also OFF.
...but there is no FN to switch off
Sorry but I don’t understand this. What do you mean with “there is no FN Switch”?

There is FN F8 to switch on Wireless access, but there is no FN to switch off.

The FN + F8 is used in order to enable and to disable the WLan.
You have to press this combination several times in the row to switch between ON and OFF

Keany and Tonny,

Thank you for your reply.

I was searching for a hot key to turn off WLan, but you're right: FN F8 will (SHOULD) switch between ON and OFF.

But it doesn't: when I press FN F8 even several times in a row, the yellow indicator remains lighted.

Other keys FN F3/F4 and F6/F7 work perfectly.

Is there maybe something to activate so that the F8 key will be active?

Thanks

I can add the following:

I went to the device manager and deactivate the wireless connexion.

The connexion was actually lost but both yellow and blue indicators remain lighted.

FN F8 did not reactivate the connexion. I had to go back to the device page to turn it on.

What system are you using? Is it Win 7?
What R930-xxx do you have exactly?

In case its Win 7 I recommend you to reinstall the Wlan driver and Toshiba Value Added Package.
The VAP controls the Fn keys and Wlan driver should be reinstalled to ensure the notebook can handle the WLan card properly.

Tonny,

it's a R930-14W, Part PT331E-06903TS4 under XP.

I tried to update the driver but it said there is no better driver than the one I have.

Thanks

Well, now everything is clear for me... You are using Win XP.
In think you did not install the Toshiba Wireless Hotkey v3.0.0.11

Toshiba Wireless Hotkey v3.0.0.11 should be installed!!!
By using Toshiba Wireless Hotkey utility you can switch from Bluetooth to Wireless lan by pressing Fn + F8. If Bluetooth is not available, this will turn the Wireless lan on and off.

I downloaded the Wireless Hotkey 3.0.0.11 and installed it.

But I get a window with XVision Maintenance Setup and I have to choose between Network X Server, Serial Line X server, Audio server, Local motif window manager and Zones. Seems to be some additional tools. I didn't saw any hotkey.

I also have some errors when installing the tools, about files which couldn't be copied.

Which component do I have to choose?

Thank you

The mentioned options are not known to me but I think you should try one of them.
In case it would be the wrong one, try the next.
Fact is that Common Modules is an essential tool which needs be installed as first tool using Win XP. After that you could Toshiba Wireless Hotkey Utility

I found the XVision problem: when extracting the Wireless Hotkey files, there was a possibility of starting the application after the extraction, but it started XVision instead of the application.

I installed the Common modules (but I think they were installed already) and then I installed the Wireless Hotkey. I have now the directory Wireless Hotkey available and I run the setup. I checked the registry and the keys have been installed.

But... the key is still not active!

My PC has been "prepared" by the IT dept. I've asked them already but they don't know anything about F8.

I will try to find if it's possible to check every keyboard key.

The IT Dept decided to upgrade my PC to Win7 and the key is working under 7.

This closes the question. Thank you all.
