Qosmio G20: USB Floppy & SATA XP installation
Posted: 05-Oct-2005 22:50

Hello,

I have Toshiba Qosmio G20 and I have the following problem:
When I try to install new windows using the SATA drivers via USB Floppy drive as a regular installation process of XP SATA drivers are required 2 times:

First time as usual you need to press F6 to specify the drivers via the USB floppy drive – this is done without problem. The floppy works.

Afterworlds there is second time when the same SATA drivers are required from Floppy (Drive A:). This is after the selection the 1 – Install Windows XP of 3 options blue screen, before the first restart. The installation starts to copy the files required for the instillation process and asks to COPY AGAIN THE SATA DRIVERS for further system usage.

On this stage the USB Floppy is inaccessible – computer cant see that there is “USB Floppy drive A:”.
So I can’t continue with the XP installation – because for the next restart there is no SATA driver and no hard disk is detected.

I’ve tried this several ways and several versions of XP installation but the same result.

Please tell me how to solve the problem – will be firmware update available that can see on that stage the plugged USB Floppy.

Regards,
Konstantin

Hi

Did you install the RAID driver?
Well, I don’t know if this a reason for this problem but as far as I know the Toshiba RAID Driver has to be added during the installation when asked to "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver”.

In order to do so, please download the Toshiba RAID driver from the Toshiba driver download web page and extract the zip file to a floppy disk. Connect the FDD to the computer before starting the setup.

The setup continues until you are asked whether you want to "S = Specify Additional Device". Press 'S' and specify the Toshiba Raid driver for XP or 2000 as required.
Then press 'Enter' to continue with the installation.

When using Windows setup to partition or format the HDD, the RAID driver will be erased in the process.

Please tell me if you solved the problem.

Best regards

Thank you for the fast reply,

Yes I did install the RAID driver (*.OEMs downloaded from Toshiba site) the FIRST TIME driver is required using “F6” and “S” and “Enter” without problem and I didn’t format the partition – just try to install it to the second partition choosing “Leave it without changes”. I’ve good experience in reinstalling Windows OS and this is no problem for me.

This FIRST TIME works correctly and I specify the drivers without problem.

The problem is at the second time the driver is required – short after “Leave it without changes” at the copy installation files stage, before the first restart.

Then as usual for such so called “F6” installations the driver is required one more time – SECOND TIME to be saved for further system usage (I guess in system32/drivers). On this stage no USB Floppy device is detected correctly – so there is no way to specify again with “S” the driver via USB Floppy because is inaccessible from the system. The label again is as at the FIRST TIME: “Please insert in drive A: the disk labeled Toshiba RAID driver and press Enter”. I have the disk still there and I press Enter several times but nothing happens – there is no Drive A: for the system – doesn’t matter that it is well connected.

This is the reason I’ve try to find solution how to fix the USB drive A: detection problem on this SECOND stage of SATA drivers specify process.

My doubt is that on the FIRST TIME USB Floppy is working well because is still under the Bios detection ownership but at the SECOND TIME the hardware detection ownership is taken by the XP where there is problem recognizing that there is USB floppy connected. That’s why I think – that probably firmware update could help or other way to make other device be drive A: (DVD drive or the SD slot).

Please tell me what to do!

Regards,
Konstantin

Hi,
Have you tried to run the SATA installation files from CD or USB memory stick instead of floppy?

Hi guys – yes I’ve tried for experiment to use USB Floppy, DVD, SD Memory Stick and even USB Flash as media for the drivers. The problem is that XP installation requires driver to be loaded from “DRIVE A:”. Non of the devices listed above except Floppy (which is not working) on that level of System installation is recognized by default as “DRIVE A:”.

Do you know way this communication to get to Toshiba’s awareness.

This is probably one of the best models of Toshiba’s Notebooks witch is also luxury purchase and I hope that soon there will be solution.

Hi there,

I had the same issue, what i did was made a custom WinXP Pro boot disk with a program called nLite. When it asked what drivers to include I gave it the SATA Raid drivers. Made the ISO burnt it and booted. The install found both HDD with out having to press F6.

Worked a treat :). Now I just need to find some wireless drivers and I should be set.

Cheers,
Mic

Hi Mickey,

Where can i find the nLite software. Can you please give the steps in detail how you followed. I am trying to install Windows 2000 advanced server on my machine (G20). But the second time the system does not recognises the floppy drive. It will be of great help if you could elaborate on the steps you followed.

Hi guys

I found this page. It’s a German site but you can download the nLite tool for free.

Hi Mickiey & Jack

Well I downloaded the nLite software and burnt an ISO image of Windows 2000 server. But when I boot the system with this CD it tries to find DHCP address... which it does not and then give some error and then says cannot locate NTDL file missing and says "Press Cntrl+Alt+Del to reboot". I have tried this several times it is not working.

Are there any specific files or alterations to be made when the ISO image is being created in the nLite software.

Please help... I need to install the Windows 2000 server urgently on my system.

Thanks
Aman

Hi

As far as I know you don’t have to format the HDD after installing the RAID driver.
If the system asks you for formatting please don’t format the HDD. The HDD should be formated before instalation of RAID driver.

To install new operating system is not possible still with Toshiba Qosmio G20.

Hi guys nLite is not permanent solution for solving new installations problems. It works only with JUST Windows XP. If you try to install Windows Media Center Edition – this will be not possible with the two CDs and even if you integrate them in one or use them separate is still forgetting the integrated SATA drivers – same problem as without nLite.

What about Linux, Knoppix or etc. – same – not possible.

Generally can somebody solve this problem with new BIOS UPDATE – better USB Floppy emulator could fix the problem once for all OS.

I’ve started this topic weeks ago and couldn’t find solution for such BASE problem as boot USB communication error.

Please suggest something!

Konstantin
