Satellite P775 - Power Surge on USB error message

My P775 is one month old.
In the last couple of days, randomly when I plug in my iPhone I get the "Power Surge on USB....." message.
If plugged into the USB 3.0 Port, iTunes does not load, nothing happens.

If plugged into the other USB 2.0 Ports on the right hand side, same as above, PLUS, my wireless mouse that is plugged into the other USB 2.0 Port on the same side is rendered inoperable as well. Until rebooting.

There seems to be no logic, as occasionally I have no problems, but rarely.
Anyone have a fix for this?

I have tried uninstalling all USB USB and re booting (thus re-installing) but I did not uninstall the software via the check box.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Try to remove and reinstall all USB controllers

To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps:
Go to the Device Manager
Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall remove them one at a time.
Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers.

Check also the Microsoft KB817900

A USB port measures current drawn by the device. If current is too great, then the USB port cuts off power and declares a current surge. The hardware problem is not solved by software. If an iPhone or iPad is drawing too much current, it cannot be used on USB ports.

You were trying to fix the wrong problem.

Reduce current drawn by putting the iPhone or iPod by using a charger before connecting to a USB port. The error message said those devices (not a USB port) were the problem.

Thanks Weston,
Your thoughts have given me something to think about.. My problem with this though is that I did not have a problem with either device until a couple of days ago. That is whether my phone was 100% charged, or near dead empty. I agree, it has to do with electrical surge.
Like just then, I had my Iphone connected for 20 minutes or more, no problem, but as soon as I activated the screen to see how much charge it had, (after reading your comment) up comes the Power surge message, and virtual disconnection. ?? Beats me. This did not happen last week. ??

I have had this advice...
"As per the symptoms and error messages, please note that this is a hardware failure in the USB port / motherboard.". As my computer is only a month old, I was hoping for some validation of this advice here, before i go about attempting warranty claim.
Again, thanks for your time.

If plugged into the USB 3.0 Port, iTunes does not load, nothing happens.

I read in some articles that there are some compatibility problems between USB 3.0 and iphone
Could it be possible that iphone does not support USB 3.0???

Regarding the USB 2.0
The idea provided by westorm is interesting….
As far as I know the USB 2.0 provides 500mA
If an external USB device would need more power as the 500mA, the device would not be detected…
In such case you could try to connect an USB hub and then the external USB device…

Last but not least it could be a simple system problem…
Checking this is not a big problem… you could start the HDD recovery and could set the OS back to factory settings…
Of course you should back the data firstly…

USB 3.0 is simply USB 2.0 hardware with other and separate hardware that is USB 3.0.

A USB port (500 ma) means a USB device maybe draws 520 ma today without problems. And 530 ma tomorrow to trip out. Nothing in software determines or adjusts that number. A number defined only by hardware. And that can vary with manufacturing tolerances.

Reloading an OS or other software changes obviously are irrelevant.. Obvious in USB specifications and how USB works.

USB 3.0 interface is faster and provides 900mA power…
USB 2.0 standard provides 500mA even if the USB port looks similar to USB 3.0.. of course there could be always an tiny difference... some notebooks could provide less or more than 500mA
