Hi
My laptop is now making 'scratching' and whirling noises. The scratching noise sounds like someting slightly out of balance. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it will continue for hours.
Nothing appears to be wrong with the operation of the pc.
My questions are:
1. Does this sound like a disc frive about to give up? (I have backed everything up just in case).
2. If I do have to replace a disc, what can I replace it with? Can I get a larger dic, or 2 larger discs?
Some technical details.
1. I do not run in RAID mode
2. I have 2@80GB HDDs
3. G20 Model: PQG20A-008002
4. I run XP

Noises like that usually come from the Cooling Fan, the HDD(s), or the DVD Drive.
If you put your ear to the notebook, can you identify the location of the noise?
If it is the HDD, you can buy a new drive but you might be limited to 120GB max.

It’s not easy to say what could cause such scratching noise but I remember that my old notebook HDD created scratching noise while moving the HDD head.
This did not happen always but sometimes while reading / writing data.
But this does not mean that the same would happen with your HDD…
As suggested by Akuma, the sound may come from cooling modules fans too…
However its always advisable to backup the data and to keep a copy of the data on another HDD or flash memory stick…
In case something would go wrong with the HDD, you could easily restore the data from the other media.

Thanks for the feedback.
It may well be the fan (or am I hoping?). I didn't think about that.
I will have to have a look somehow.
Thanks for your prompt replies.
