Satellite A300 DVD tray won't open and cause spikes of high CPU usage
Posted: 16-Jun-2012 09:48

Hi

I have a Toshiba Satellite A300-1MM laptop and i have this problem with optical drive (Matshita DVD Ram Uj880as):

Sometimes DVD-RAM tray refuse to open. The LED lights up briefly but still nothing. Windows recognise the drive but the tray refuse to open. Eject commands from My Computer and from Computer Management -> Disk Management don't work. I can open the tray manually but the optical drive refuse to read any cd/dvd. No error code in return.

When that happens it cause spikes of high CPU usage (60% to 100%) in System Idle Process. Only shut down and restart fix this problems. After that the laptop works fine and the optical drive too.

I have replaced Win7 32 bits with 64 bits version and the problem still persist.

Please help. Thanks.

Hi,

What applications have you installed?
Maybe the virus scanner or something is trying to access or lock the drive.

I have the same machine with Win7 32bit and use several players. Everything works perfectly. On this virtual way it is not easy to say what the problem can be. Your notebook configuration is not known to us and we don’t know how have you configured your OS and which additional applications are preinstalled.

Maybe stupid advice now but you should install original Vista recovery image that you got with your notebook and test functionality with “factory settings”. If the same problem occurs than we can discuss about it.

Today happened again. I just wanted to write some DVDs with Nero Burning Rom v 8.3.6.0. I put a blank DVD-R (Verbatim) into the optical drive. Dvd was recognised.

I made settings of writing session. When I wanted to burn the DVD, Nero said that there is no blank in the drive. DVD tray refused to open again.

After shut down and a restart everything worked fine and I wrote 5 DVDs one after another without problems.

My notebook configuration is unknown to you because it's a product made for Romania. Model number PSAG8E-01L00GR3: CPU Intel T3200 Dual Core, now with 4GB of RAM DDR2 800MHz, HDD WD250GB, integrated video adapter Mobile Intel 4, LAN, WAN, Bluetooth, IEEE1394, card reader, 4 USB, eSATA. I bought it with 2GB+1GB of RAM. Recently upgraded to 4GB of RAM. (two identical module of 2GB DDR2 800 Samsung).
That's the reason why I installed 64 bits version of Windows 7.

It's not stupid advise but I don't want to return to Windows Vista because of two reason:
1. I don't have recovery image that came with my notebook (it was a preinstalled version of Windows Vista).
2. the poor performance of my laptop in Windows Vista.

Errors in Event Viewer that cause DVD drive to not respond and cause system hang out for 10 to 30 seconds:
  • The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom0.
  • The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period.

Solution:

I installed Intel Matrix Storage Manager from Toshiba laptop support. The following data was added in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStor\Parameters\Portn\
where n represents the port number, starting from 0 to 5. Within each of those keys are the following DWORD values:
LPM: 0 (disable) or 1 (enable); default = enable
LPMSTATE: 0 (partial), 1( slumber); default = disable; ignored when LPM = 0
LPMDSTATE: 0 (partial), 1 (slumber); default = enable
DIPM: 0 (disable), 1 (enable); default = enable

Link Power Management (LPM) is described by Intel as a “feature described by the Serial ATA specification to overcome the power demand of a high-speed serial interface, SATA and providing the capability of SATA at the minimum power cost.” Apparently, for it to work, it has to be coupled with a disk drive that supports it correctly. If the disk does not support the feature, various people online have reported exactly the symptom I’ve been seeing: The system hangs, and then the Array Storage reports an error code 9 (\Device\Ide\iaStor0 did not respond within the timeout period).

No more system hang out after that.
Thank you for your help
