Cannot install Win 7 on Satellite C660-26H - HDD not recognised
Posted: 11-Jun-2012 16:36

I'm reinstalling windows 7 on a Satellite C660-26H
The hard disk failed on this laptop so I have added a new Toshiba 160gb sata drive.

When I try to install windows 7 I get the error message

"no device drivers were found. make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers and then click ok"

I get this when I normally would be selecting which drive to install windows too. I'm assuming I need the sata driver for the laptop?

Where can I get the sata driver for this laptop?
Or do I need the sata driver for the new hard disk?

Any help appreciated, thanks!

Hi

First of all check if the new HDD is listed and recognized in BIOS. This should be listed on the first BIOS page.

If its listed, then save the changes pressing F10 and access the BIOS.

I’m not quite sure if you really need the SATA drivers because as far as I know Win 7 should already contain an standard SATA driver.

However the SATA drivers can be found on the Intel page.
You should search of Intel Storage Manager.

Hi thanks for the help :)

The hard disk is recognized in the BIOS.

I even tried a vista disk to see if it could see the hard disk to install to and it can.

I downloaded intel storage manager from https://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp? (it comes in a .zip file with an .exe inside, I ran the .exe and put all the files it creates in a folder and then copied it to a usb stick)

I tried to install windows 7 again and when it comes to the install part I get the error message "No device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK."

So I selected 'browse' and selected the usb stick folder I had copied the intel storage manager files too but I get the same error message again. Is this how I'm meant to add in the sata drivers?

Any other ideas appreciated thanks.

Possible work around: Could I install vista first and then upgrade to windows 7 using the cd key on the back of the laptop? (I have a seperate vista cd key I dont need)

Hi

I think you downloaded wrong driver/package…
You need the one which contains ini and dll files.

I found this one on the Intel page:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?lang=eng&changeLang=true&DwnldId=20625

Please take care to the 32bit or 64bit version…

I got the drivers from your link above and put them on the usb stick etc.

Selected them during the windows 7 install and one driver is still visible if 'hide drivers that are not compatible with hardware on this computer' box is checked.

Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller (F:\iaAHCI.inf)

Clicked ok and everything seems to be working... until I get the error message "No new devices could be found. Make sure the driver files are correct and located on the driver installation media"

Any other ideas?

Thanks again for the help, I was just replying how I will be calling my first born MisterX when the no new devices could be found error message came up :(

Obviously this driver is not compatible with your hardware :(
I posted a link to the Intel Rapid Storage Manager… this is the follower of Intel Matrix Storage Manager

So maybe you could try the Intel® Matrix Storage Manager
Intel download page

But I'm really confused because this should be a part of Win 7

By the way: does the Vista recognize the HDD?
Please set the BIOS to default settings before installing Win 7

I tried the first 2 links on the intel download page (the .zip files) but neither had any drivers that were recognized

I get an error when I try to run the .exe files because im running xp but will be able to get them tomorrow

I installed vista on the laptop just to see if it all worked and it does. Plus I didn't have to add in any drivers for the sata during the install everything was detected by vista.

Going to try setting the bios to defaults settings now

Correct

Well, this is what I meant above: usually you don’t need to include the SATA drivers into Win 7 or Vista since this driver is already included… therefore it’s really strange that Win 7 cannot recognize the HDD but Vista does…

What you can try to do is to upgrade the Vista to Win 7

FIXED!!

I tried a new copy of windows 7 (downloaded and put on usb) and it recognizes the hard disk, didn't need to load drivers either :)

Cheers again for the help :)
