Satellite A500 - left speaker problem (Harman/Kardon)

Hi,

I have a Toshiba satellite A500 laptop and lately I seem to be having intermittant problems with the left-hand built in speaker.

Sometimes the sounds come out of the speaker perfectly but then it'll go off for a while and then come back on, then go off again. There's no pattern to it at all, so I can't pin point why it is happening.

There doesn't seem to be a problem at all with the right-hand speaker.

Can anybody help here please?

Could it be a loose wire or may it be something to do with a driver that needs updating? I am using Windows 7 which I am new to.

Any info at all would be great - thanks.

Paul

As far as I know such issue has nothing to do with driver so, in my opinion, it is hardware related issue. You must understand that on this virtual way we cannot offer exact diagnostic.

When you use Toshiba diagnostic tool is there the same problem?
What is with headphones? Everything works ok?

Hi Dr. Lamp

Thanks for replying.

When I use headphones the sound isn't great, It's a bit crackly. I thought this may have been due to headphones being old though.

How do I use the Toshiba Diagnostic Tool? Is this part of the Control Panel?

Thanks again.

The Toshiba Diagnostic tool displays the basic information of your Toshiba notebook and diagnose its built-in devices.
Here you can find more details:

However, I’m afraid this utility will not help you a lot…
From my point of view there is an technical issue with the right built-in speaker.
I think only speaker replacement would help to sort out this problem.

By the way: is Smart Audio installed on your notebook?
Check the control panel… if its installed, check the settings and disable the “3d immersion”

I don't think Smart Audio is installed but my knowledge of laptops and Windows 7 is very poor so it could be there and I just can't see it.

When I first noticed the problem I thought that I would have to replace the speaker so what you said doesn't suprise me.

Thanks for helping.

Have you tested speaker’s functionality with “Toshiba diagnostic tool”?

Anyway, in my opinion you have two options now:
Either to contact Toshiba service provider and let them check speaker’s functionality or use external speakers/headphones.
I also think it is hardware related issue and there must be some problem with speaker conection.
