HDD spin down every 2-3 seconds on Satellite R830

Hello!

After 2-3 hours of work the typical noise of HDD spin up/spin down be heared from my Satellite R 830-146 (PT32LE). It may continue about 10 minutes or longer and one way ti fix it is to make notebook sleep and wake up it again.

I'm sure, it is not normal behavior and not safe for hdd. I haven't any modified settings in windows battery profiles, only Toshiba preinstalled defaults.
Also there are no any software for managing powersave or hdd - excluding Toshiba preinstalled products.

Do you have any ideas, how to fix this problem?
There is only one suspicious moment I see: ubuntu-server in virtualbox, but it haven't laptop-mode-tools installed at all and it uses virtual drive, so, I think, it would not make any effect on real hdd.

I think this happens because there is a background process which access the HDD and read or write the data there.
There are a lot of temporal data which would be stored on the HDD. For example during the usage of internet browsers or similar… this is nothing uncommon and could happen if the process would not be canceled properly.

You can start the task manager and check the Processes tab.
There you will find all processes running in the background which could access the HDD.

You can also try to set the HDD in “suspend mode”
This could be done in Win 7 power options.

Control panel -> power options -> choose the power plant -> advanced settings.

Now you can suspend the HDD after the notebook has not been used for a specific period of time.

Ou, now I see, that I made an mistake... Not spin down - its impossible with so fast periods =) I mean heads parkings of course))) Sorry...

Of course such behavior can not be result of activity of some background services and writing information in all cases, because this behavior is linked with hdd low activity.

Next, the problem in not in that hdd goes out from syspend/parked mode. The problem is that it begin series of parking-unparking loops. And there is not any dependency, is computer on battery or AC is plugged in.. is there low activity or hight... is there low temperature of system or hight - not important, this may happens in all cases.

As I seen, in windows there are no any configuration of hdd apm mode, something like hdparm -B255 - to disable it complitely, and to fix this hdd bug... and safe hdd health =)

There is an tool designed by Toshiba called TOSHIBA HDD Protection
http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/FAQ2503AZ0000R01.htm

Using the acceleration sensor built in the PC, HDD Protection detects vibration, shocks and similar signs in the PC, and automatically moves the HDD head to a safe position to reduce the risk of damage that could be caused by head-to-disk contact.

Of course you can disable this utility (HDD protection OFF) as mentioned in the HowTo above.

I'll try completely disable this on next reboot. Also I tried to disable it when loops of parkings happened, but no effect given.
