I am trying to restore my laptop to factory settings; it is a Toshiba Satellite L40-18z. I have tried the F8 procedure it has not worked, also been into backup and restore centre but it will only let me backup files. I guess I’m going to need a disk, am I correct, any help would be much appreciated.

Yes you are correct. You need recovery disc for recovery image installation.
If you don’t have it maybe you can order new one on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
Other solution is to install own OS using Microsoft installation disc.

Hello
Generally speaking yes, especially if you will be lucky and find one designed for Satellite L40 (PSL48E).

Recovery disks released for Satellite A200 or A205 series are not compatible with L40 series due to different drivers which are part of the Toshiba image.
