Satellite U500 - physical button won't turn wireless adapters on/off
Posted: 04-May-2012 15:26

Ladies and gentlemen, this one's a little weird.

For some reason, the physical on/off button on the front of my wife's U500 will not turn WLAN and Bluetooth adabters on or off without a hard reboot.

If I swtich the button off, the LED next to it remains on and all adapters continue to run, and will not actually switch off unless I restart the machine, and likewise if I switch the button back on.

So at least we know the hardware itself is working, but it's not actually functioning. I went through every driver, software and setting I could think of that might cause this, but haven't found anything amiss. What do you think is going on here?

TIA,
Shady

When you leave WLAN button ON all the time can you enable or disable WLAN or BT using FN+F8 key combination?

I know you will not be satisfied with my comment now but in my opinion you should leave it in position ON all the time and control both devices using FN+F8 key combination.

You know, on this virtual way it is not easy to discuss about such issues and if you want to know what is wrong there this should be tested in Toshiba service.
So long you can use your WLAN without problems do it but if you want to have well working switch contact service and ask for help.

U500 is pretty old piece of hardware. Is warranty still valid?

Okay, I just did a clean reinstallation of my system, and that thing is still behaving the same. I know it's not an outright hardware problem because wireless and bluetooth do actually switch off or on after I set the button to either position and then restart the machine, so we already know that the button itself actually works. It's what's causing it to not swtich the adapters on or off immediately that's daunting.

Again, I can still swtich both adapters on and off using the Fn+F8 tile. So although actual functionality isn't hampered, I do find it strange that the physical button should behave the way it is.

Any theories?

Hi

I know that the physical WLan On/Off button is NOT controlled by any software nor by BIOS!

Of course in some BIOS versions the WLan can be enabled and disabled but don’t think it’s the case here…

So it can be just an lose connection between the button and the sensor…
For me this is one and only plausible explanation…

Okay, good news: issue resolved (at least for now.)

Yesterday, I happened to flip the U500 over to see if it had a receptacle for a SIM card (it didn't; there's a place for it under the battery, with an embossed graphic and all, but no actual WWAN module is installed.) So I noticed the small plastic cover next to the larger one under which the RAMs would go, right where the wireless/BT switch is. It provides access to the Wi-Fi module.

So I decided to unscrew that and take a peek inside. I just took out the wireless module to check for any physical damage and put it back in, and shined a light on the sensor and switch mechanism. Everything seemed to be in order. I screwed the cover back on and started the machine, and the switch worked as it should again! I don't know if it's moisture or accumulated dust or anything else, but it looks like all it needed was a breath of fresh air! Happy camper here.

Thanks for all of your helpful replies.

:)
It can be possible. Main thing is that everything is OK now. If you will have more questions or issues you are welcome.
