Satellite L300-1F8 freezes with Win 7 but ok running Win XP

Hi there,

got this Satellite L300-1F8 as hand me down from my sister, and first look at it seems that it was in working condition.
It has no OS on it and I decided to install it with windows 7.
It booted fine on the disc but after a while on the installation process it would freeze or restart.

Next thing I did was have it ran on a Ubuntu live cd... it did boot up on the live cd but after a while it froze again. I ran a memory test on it and all the modules are fine.
I have the hard disk check and again it was ok. So i tried to install Windows xp on it and to my surprise it installed without any problems.

Does this mean that I can only install XP on this model?

Also i have noticed that whenever the indicator light of the battery (the orange one on the front of the unit) is lit, the machine would restart or hang....
Does this means that this unit has a power issue?

and oh, since I have it running on win XP, i updated its Bios from 1.50 to 2.20 and again tried to install Win 7, but got the same problem again.

I reverted to Win XP and it installed without a hitch.
Here is the full model of my unit: Satellite L300-1F8 PSLBGE00T004AR......

any help would be greatly appreciated........thanks.......

Hi

Does this mean that I can only install XP on this model?

No, you can install any system. The hardware specifications of Satellite L300-1F8 looks ok: Intel Pentium dual-core processor T3400, 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD and Mobile Intel GMA 4500M graphic card… this is good enough for Win 7

I’m wondering why the notebook froze running Win 7 or Linux…

Also i have noticed that whenever the indicator light of the battery (the orange one on the front of the unit) is lit, the machine would restart or hang....Does this means that this unit has a power issue?

Do you mean the battery indicator? The battery indicator is the 3rd from left.
The battery indicator shows the condition of charge. Green means fully charged and orange means being charged.

There are also other indicators:
The first from left is DC IN indicator which glows green when DC power is supplied from the AC adaptor. If the adaptor output is abnormal this indicator shows no light.

The second from left is Power indicator which glows green when the notebook is ON. If you turn off the computer in sleep mode, this will blink orange. If the computer shuts down the indicator shows no light.

Your notebook model is supported for Win7 and on Toshiba download page you can find all necessary drivers, tools and utilities. Due to this fact you can use Win7 on your notebook model.

Last year I’ve installed Win7 32bit on friend’s L300 and it runs perfectly and stabile so there is no reason why you should not be able to use it too, except there is some hardware problem.

Which Win7 installation disc do you use? Is it original Microsoft disc?

hi there, it made me wonder too, because when I looked up at the specs of this machine I know it could run on Win 7, as I have installed it on my other machine with a lower specs than this one. Also I noticed that it is running hot. So I decided to disassemble it up to the board level. Cleaned it, as there is a lot of dust build up, applied a fresh thermal paste to the heat sinks, cleaned the fans and its heat sink.

Checked for any burnt signs on the mobo, found nothing unusual. I then put it all back again and tried to install Win 7, but then again I would not. as usual when I get into the process of partitioning the drive, the screen would go blank and it would froze. Suspecting that it could really be the hard drive, I managed to borrow a new drive from a friend who has a computer store, tried again but to no avail. I have a genuine Win 7 Home Premium X86 installer.

I then re installed my Win XP and as usual it installed without a hitch, but after the installation and as I was installing some programs, it started to restart randomly. but one thing that i noticed is that whenever it would restart, I am not getting this prompt that should appear whenever the machine was not turned off properly. there should have been a prompt that would let you choose whether to start it normally or on safe mode, etc. I might be wrong but its one thing that I noticed that after it restarts,it would just boot up normally as if you have shut it down or restarted it properly.

I did checked that voltage of the adapter and it is normal. the last thing that I did was that I I disabled the 2nd core at the bios settings( I updated the bios) and after that, I have noticed that machine is not hot as it was, and so far it is running stable (still at XP), actually its the one I'm using right now. I put on the new hard drive that I borrowed and tried to install Win 7 but it just wont. Put back in the HD with XP and it runs normally. I guess I have to have this running on XP as I really don't know what to do anymore.....thanks again for the reply....more power....

Really, really strange…
Fact is that notebook should be able to run with Vista, Win 7 or Win XP trouble-free.
If it’s not the case I would assume that its hardware issue.

You said you tried to install Win 7 using an disk from Lenovo (starter kit). As far as I know such disk contains drivers for the notebooks and this might be not compatible with your L300… therefore you should use an genuine Win 7 disk from Microsoft.

hi there, maybe its really a hardware issue because just last night it started to randomly restart again. I did tried to install a different Win 7 installer that I borrowed from a friend and still it wont, but its still usable and maybe would just use this for browsing....thanks for the replies everyone and more power....

It is a Bad capacitor on the board that causes this problems
The Toshiba satellite A300 and L300 are known for a big hardware problem related with the Nec Tokin capacitor.
