How to open an four year old upright 160 GB USB (backup) disk, alu housing
Posted: 27-Apr-2012 17:53

Bought unit 4 years ago, for backup purposes.
Unit carries no model- and/or serial number.

Assume that USB part of unit is out of order, unit not -anymore- seen by XP system; after weekly use.
Tried other USB cables and ports.
Would like to open unit, to get access to disk.

Any advise welcome. T.I.A.

Forgot to mention that frontplate clearly indicates "Toshiba"

Sorry mate but I don’t know how to help you without any details about the device you are talking about… furthermore I assume this external HDD is faulty if it cannot be recognized by an system.

Hi Daschiba and others,

Unit appeared to be Toshiba PX1219E-1G16 160GB .

After the "Deafening Silence" of Support Toshiba Europe, decided to open unit as described by Daschiba.

Before that: Checked Power Supply, was O.K.; so my idea that USB interface was defect, was vindicating.

Not that simple, had to use "brute force", but (luckily) disk 100 percent O.K., no lost files; so "back-up still available.
