Toshiba Stor.e ALU 2S 3.5" wont work with my XBOX

Hi all, first timer here

Just recieved a Toshiba external hard drive as a gift. Wanted one for a while, primarily to use with my XBOX 360s to watch movies and listen to music on. However the xbox doesnt pick up the hardrive (connected through USB), but it will pick up my friends generic hardrives. Anybody have any idea why?

It looks like a pretty recent model, here are specs given in the (very sparse) manual provided with the hardrive:

Toshiba stor.e ALU 2S 3.5"
1TB
USB 3.0
Backward compatible with USB 2.0 (I have no idea what "backward" means here

I am by no means a computer person. I use the Laptop for basic college work, web surfing, media, apps etc. A few of my friends have external harddrives, mostly cheap-average generic brands and they all work fine on my XBOX, just plug and play.

If anyone has any advice on how to do this or even on where to go woth my question I would really appreciate it.

TIA
Creamy

Hi

In my opinion “Backward compatible” means that you can use this HDD with USB 2.0 ports. But fact is that USB 3.0 port provides 900mA and USB 2.0 only 500mA.
I assume this is your HDD

Under “Specifications” you can find info that this HDD needs 900mA power

So you have to connect this HDD to two USB 2.0 ports using an Y USB cable.
I think this will help you.

Thank you, Interesting reply, I#ll try it out when I can get to the shops tomorrow.

Just one thing. The HD works on my 2 year old "dell" notebook which Im pretty sure uses USB 2.0.
If insufficient powe to the USB ports or outdated USB ports was the issue would I not have the same problem with my computer as I do with my XBOX?

This means that the HDD is ok… not sure what HDD standard or file format the XBOX requires but you should check if the HDD needs to be formatted using file format the is supported by xbox
