Satellite L300 - clean install Win 7 SP1 64-bit

I have just done a clean install of Win 7 64-bit replacing the normal Vista 32-bit that comes with the laptop.

The install was smooth but I have some questions relating to the following:

• I have adjusted the AutoPlay settings to ‘Ask me every time’ for all selections. The problem is that when playing DVD’s in either WMP or VLC the disk reads but is noisy. This is fine for CD’s with no excessive noise. The acoustic silencer on the downloads site is for 32-bit but can be used in this laptop. In the original Vista there is no noise at all, so I am wondering if there are other settings that can sort this out, otherwise I will have to keep changing things manually with the acoustic silencer.

• I noticed a very faint noise coming from the laptop (like a light version of a commercial jet aircraft when you are boarding it). I ran a Video Memory Stress Test CE and it showed up some errors. If I reduce the screen brightness there is less noise so I am wondering if it is something to do with the screen inverter board I am sure that it is not the HDD or cooling fan, but it could be something on the motherboard.

• In terms of backup will Acronis slow down my system or are Win 7 backup options OK?

Many thanks for any potential solutions to these problems.

The first problem, autoplay, appears to have been resolved by installing all toshiba drivers.

In terms of the acoustic silencer, I have installed the one for Vista 32-bit as there are none available for Windows 7 64-bit.

I'm still not sure what is the best test for the screen.

Perhaps the faint noise from the keyboard area is nothing to worry about. Vista was such a resource heavy operating system that the only thing you could hear all the time was the fan running which masked all other problems.

I still don't know if it is worth buying Acronis or if backup options within Windows 7 will suffice.

Long time ago I’ve installed Win7 32bit on friends Satellite L300. It worked perfectly. Much better than original Vista.

I don’t understand what kind of test do you mean. I hope you have installed right display driver and LCD works perfectly with native resolution.

Creation of Win7 recovery image with Acronis is, generally speaking, good decision. With this disc you can install Win7 again and again very quickly and you must not install every single driver separately.

If you want to keep this notebook for longer time I think it is worth to buy it. One more thing: you will buy it one time and you can use it in the future too if you will decide to buy new notebook or PC.

OK - thanks. I will think about Acronis.

I have a BIGGER problem now and have also gone to a Windows 7 forum about it:

http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-support/79481-disk-checking-has-been-cancelled-windows-7-64-bit.html#post258915

Basically I am getting the msg: "A disk checking has been scheduled. Disk checking has been cancelled" after trying to run chkdsk. This MAY have been something to do with one of the Toshiba driver updates although I can't be sure.

Any ideas?

The chkdsk problem was resolved by going into the command prompt as administrator and typing in chkntfs /t:0

I am not sure if a Toshiba software addition caused the problem in the first place.

Thanks for this info and sharing the news with us!
Chkntfs /t:0 command sets the schedule countdown to zero... not sure why this happened but happy to hear that you could solve this!

OK - I am still having problems with the DVD player as in my first point. The behaviour in my new setup just isn't the same as in the Vista default system set up by Toshiba.

With all the new drivers installed some DVD's play quietly and others don't. I am trying to figure out a way around this. There are no 64-bit acoustic silencer drivers for this model, so I have installed the 32-bit acoustic silencer, but I would rather have things working as in a prepared model by Toshiba.

Hi

As far as I know the Toshiba Acoustic Silencer software is not available for Win 7.
It was released for Vista system.
It seems that if you use Win 7, you will have to use the unit without this tool.

OK - I have actually installed the acoustic silencer for 32-bit in my 64-bit Win 7. I can use it manually but this is far from perfect.

The default behaviour in the Vista 32-bit (Toshiba prepared) is that when a DVD is played this is done in silent mode so no adjustment from the user is needed.

I am wondering if there is a workaround in my Win 7 64-bit clean install?

Maybe the reason is DVD itself. Be sure DVD is right in place and don’t produce some vibrations.
Acoustic silencer is nice tool but not so important. This tool just reduces drive speed and should make notebook more comfortable for usage.

This may be the case. I have tested using 3 different DVD's and am getting erratic results.

I am wondering if there is a way to reduce disk player speed in Windows Media Player, VLC or the Toshiba DVD Player...
