I have seen similar posts about this issue but I haven't resolved my problem. Sorry if this is repetitive for some.
My DVD drive is visible on My Computer, however when I put a disk in it doesn't show up / run (it cannot be read).
I tried using the automatic thing to delete upper and lower files in the registry. And I tried reinstalling the driver.
The PC Diagnostic says the DVD drive fails the test but doesn't pose a solution. Nor can Microsoft fixit help.
Please can someone help. Thanks

Can you use optical disc drive as bootable device?
Can ODD read bootable discs?

I am not sure. I have created recovery disks previously, though I have never tried to boot from them. How can I check this?

It is very easy to check this.
Start your notebook and press F12 key several times to enter boot menu.
When the boot menu is shown on the screen put recovery disc into optical disc drive.
In the menu choose CD/DVD device and press ENTER button.
Wait a moment to see if optical disc drive will start to read disc and load data. If this will work you can interrupt installation on first step with cancel option.
Please let us know if this works properly.

Sorry this took me so long to reply to.
I tried following the steps you suggested.
I pressed F12, and at the bottom, the various device icons were presented. I highlighted the CD/DVD drive and hit enter.
But it continued to boot as normal (starting windows, logon screen, desktop)
So I guess it won't work as an ODD.

Hi
Maybe the drive’s laser lens is not clean…
Try to clean this using the cotton wool tip and a little bit alcohol.
Be careful cleaning the lens… after that try read different disks (CDs, DVDs)
