External USB HDD Stor.E Basics Sleep Mode

Hello to Everyone
Recently i bought Stor.E Basics 500GB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive to store my work archive (mainly .docx and .xls formats).
During my work after maybe 5 or 10 minutes my HDD goes in sleep mode and it takes a time to wake up my Drive and resave file. Is there any solution of my problem? I need to disable Sleep Mode.

A few things that i tried:
1) I tried to use "Always On" profile in Power option from control panel
2) turned Off "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" from Device Manager => all Usb Root Storage Devices.
3) And also Disk management => Properties => Hardware => HDD => Policies => Optimize for performance.

OS - Windows XP SP3.

Do you have the same HDD like this one?

This HDD needs 900mA power supply.
This means you need one USB port 3.0 standard or 2 x USB 2.0 ports

I think if your notebook supports only USB 2.0 then you should use the USB Y cable which allows you to connect the HDD to 2 USB ports.

I think Paolo30 has not understood the problem.
Normally the external hard disk is going correctly. The power is available.

I have the same hard disk from Toshiba and the same problem.
After a short time is the hard disk in a quasi-sleep mode! (The response times of the hard disk are extremely long)

Now, I bought a USB 3.0 external hard disk from Verbatin. With the Verbatin hard disk I have no problems.

I think we need a response from Toshiba technical service.

This is user to user forum.

Fact is (this is mentioned in HDD specifications ) that this HDD needs 900mA in order to work properly.
But this does not mean that other USB 3.0 compatible HDDs needs 900mA too… this would mean that different USB devices can work with lower power i.e: 500mA like provided by USB 2.0 port.

Of course the USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0 but in my opinion to get enough power two USB ports should be used.

I used this hard drive into a correct USB 3.0 port.
The situation is: the hard drive doesn’t work correctly.

You say: “900 mA”
I say: I bought a USB 3.0 hard drive for a USB 3.0 port.
I don’t found specific information about 900 mA on the packaging.

If Toshiba can’t ensure the warranted characteristics (a hard drive that works properly), then Toshiba must retract this product.

Check if your notebook supports the latest 3.0 USB driver.
Try to connect also the HDD to the USB 2.0 port and check how it acts.
Ensure also that your notebook use the latest BIOS version.

If the external hdd comes with software you can check if there is an option to stop it from sleeping. I think there is a software with that option for Seagate external hdds.
Normally you can't stop the external hdd from sleeping after 5-10 min.

If you really need this you can use this program. You can choose up to four external hdds and enter a interval like 5 mins (before the hdd goes to sleep) and other options. This way it will keep the hdd from going to sleep.

I'm having the same problem. My USB3 1TB Toshiba Store E Basics disk shuts down if it isn't access for a few minutes.

It isn't a power issue as it runs fine when transferring data. It will power down if left idle for a few minutes, requiring it to be unplugged and replugged to be recognised by the OS.

This is very irritating behaviour. I have changed all my power settings to no avail. My other external USB3 hard disk doesn't have this problem so it isn't my laptop. Its the Toshiba hard disk.

Same issue here with a new Store.E Basic.

No way to permanently disable this annoying "go-to-sleep-after-1-mn, take-20-second-to-wake-up" so-called power-saving function.

Oh and the Load Cycle Count is at ~1000 cycles after 10 days, which is huge.

(And some people here should read the thread before risking an answer - this has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with USB voltage - this is a design flaw by Toshiba)

Had no luck contacting Toshiba for a fix - which is a rather simple one to implement, all other hard disk manufacturers provide it at some point to set/disable hardcoded automatic sleep functions. Except Toshiba.

Disappointing. Last time I deal with this brand
