Hardware Update/Upgrade questions for Tecra S10-183
Posted: 25-Mar-2012 20:54

Hi,

TOSHIBA TECRA S10-183
Serial number: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Model Number: PTSB3E-0YR04KGR
BTO code: P8700/2G/160G/15.4WBT/DS2/L/M/B/W/3G
Preinstalled Software: Yes R11382GR
Date of purchase: 05/13/2011

I use above notebook mobile professionals use for CAD programming and also for Office applications.
2GB of RAM (standard), I can increase to 4GB Kingston (a tie) on purchase.
With the 160GB HDD I had an awful lot at the beginning of loss of speed.
So I had let a month later to a 120GB OCZ Vertex switch from second
And ran for almost 9 months without problems.
Now I have not so much free place in my SDD. So I would like to
"Intel SSD 520 Series 240GB 2.5 SATA III"
Jump leave.

My question would be, I would get this problem?
1) In theory, SATA3 work perfectly well that 240GB SSD right?
In manual, it is up to 120GB SATA2 SSD in it. However, the handbook of 2009. So the information is very old. And at that time were not yet 240GB free for end users SATA3 SSD hard drives.

2) Are there any Windows Professional / Ultimate / Business 64 for 7 as this laptop?
Original I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. I wanted my memory that is extended to 8GB. CAD program running on 64 bit operating system much better.

3) Is the graphics card soldered onto my laptop or can I let it replace it? So it's a plug-in card?

4) Can I move to a higher processor / CPU? To what size?

5) the Mobile UMTS and HSDPA / HSPAU / LTE is capable?

6) I still can not get on the Toshiba support site:
http://de.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/generic/SUPPORT_PORTAL/
find when entering the serial number or the model number is not my laptop?

About an answer I would be very happy.

Sorry for this bad English. My Main Language is German!!

So i hope somebody can help me by my questions.

With kind regards,

Etem Basoglu

Correct
1) In theory, SATA3 work perfectly well that 240GB SSD right?
In manual, it is up to 120GB SATA2 SSD in it. However, the handbook of 2009. So the information is very old. And at that time were not yet 240GB free for end users SATA3 SSD hard drives.

The SATA controller is not size limited… you can use 250GB, 500GB or larger HDDs. The same should be possible with SSD drives since the controller is the same.

2) Are there any Windows Professional / Ultimate / Business 64 for 7 as this laptop?
Original I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. I wanted my memory that is extended to 8GB. CAD program running on 64 bit operating system much better.

Not sure what you mean exactly but if you want to installed Win 7 64bit then you can do it without big problems… the 64bit drivers are available on the Toshiba European driver page.

3) Is the graphics card soldered onto my laptop or can I let it replace it? So it's a plug-in card?
The notebook seems to be equipped with an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 150M graphic chip. This is external chip which is plugged/soldered on the motherboard. But even if you could remove this chip, the upgrade is NOT possible.

4) Can I move to a higher processor / CPU? To what size?
http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB9401AX0001R01.htm

Generally speaking the CPU upgrade depends on the chipset on the motherboard.
You could upgrade the CPU, if the chipset would support the new CPU.
There are still questions about BIOS support but I read here in the forum that some people were able to upgrade the new CPU.

5) the Mobile UMTS and HSDPA / HSPAU / LTE is capable?
The 3G support modules seems to support HSDPA standard

6) I still can not get on the Toshiba support site:
http://de.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/generic/SUPPORT_PORTAL/
find when entering the serial number or the model number is not my laptop?

Maybe its not inserted in the database but your Tecra S10-183 belongs to the PTSB3E series… you can search for other models belonging to the PTSB3E to get the details…

Hi Paupau,

Thank you very very much......

To 1.)
OK is answered. Thanks. I had the same thought.
I had in mind only because most SATA3 SSD and SATA2 connection but notebook has.
What Do you think which one SSD is better?
Intel 520 Series (gives 5 Jears Waranty so good and stabile Hardware ) or Samsung 830 Series?

To 2.) I mean:
Give it Original Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate/Business 64Bit for this TOSHIBA Notebook so that all TOSHIBA Software and Drivers included?
It is a pity that my current operating system(Windows Professional 7 32Bit) does not support 8GB RAM.
For the Operation System Windows 7 64 bit, I found no drivers for my Notebook. So it's probably safe to test on their own. :-(

To 3.)
OK. Have understand it. Thanks.

To 4.)
I have read the Extern Site. My Notebook is at the moment in Waranty. When it is out of Waranty then i will look and ask again here so in 1,5 Jears. I hope then that here somebody have practise to Upgraded CPU.

To 5.)
OK Thanks. But LTE no ready and not Upgraded or?

To 6.)
OK Thanks.

Thank you very much for your help.

Best greats

Sorry mate… don’t have any experience with both SSD drives so cannot provide you any tips or recommendation… but I think you should google a little bit and should read some test reports provided by other guys…

To 2.) I mean:

The Toshiba drivers for Win 7 64bit are available on the Toshiba European driver page… I could find the drivers here:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/ -> Support & Download -> Download Drivers
So you can install Win 7 64bit and could use the full RAM without any big problems.

OK Thanks. But LTE no ready and not Upgraded or?
Well, I did not find any info about LTE… the module does not seem to support this feature… only HSDPA is supported…

Greetings

Hi,

Thank you very much for help.
Know 4 days after my questions, i have become today this Email from Toshiba Support.
I will send here Information for any one if somebody interrested.

I have today order Intel SSD 520 Serie 240GB. I hope that gives no problem.

1.)
Tested and certified for the notebook, the built-in hard drive so that we can give no performance guarantee, if another disk is installed.

For every Toshiba laptop is the only one of us originally built hard drive tested and certified. Therefore, we can give you any information about your notebook maximum usable disk capacity.

Of course it is possible that other and larger hard drives are detected and used as the type built by us - though we can give you the reasons stated above does not guarantee function.

Our partners have translated depot experience with hard drive upgrades, please partner with a depot in combination, it will give you information about hard disks, availability and prices.

IME company, Borsig 7-9, D 93092 Barbing, Tel +49 - 9401-9333 0
If the manual are given max 128GB, you can assume that these data are correct. We take in no way a guarantee function for the hard drives are bigger.

2.)
We regret that we can offer you any other Windows version, so we ask that you apply directly to retailers or Microsoft in order to inquire about a possible release.

You can upgrade the version with the Windows AnyTime upgrade to a different version.
Information can be found here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/de-DE/windows7/products/windows-anytime-upgrade

3.)
The compromise between design and integration density is so limited that it is hardware not provided by Toshiba to replace the existing CPU or graphics card for a different model. The graphics card is inserted.
The graphics card can unfortunately not be changed individually.

4.)
Also, the processor can not be replaced by another.

5.)
The following information we can to 3G HSPA FOR EU (F3507g) give:

Wireless WAN (3G) Yes
Support Network (EV-DO / HSDPA) HSDPA
Support Region Europe
Support multiple carriers
Diversity Antenna Yes
SIM slot Yes
No Wake On WWAN
No R.T.E.N.S
User installable / replaceable No.
BIOS Lock No.
Others GPS Supported
Removable (no / user / service) service
The module supports UMTS HSDPA. Since LTE is still germinating uniform international standard LTE is not currently supported.

6.)
This feature is currently being revised. Then there should not put your device appear or be recognized.

Unfortunately, not all the devices detected on the Support website, so that this restriction is that you described. All available drivers for your notebook and you will find tools but also in our driver database:

http://de.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp
