Satellite L650 PSK1JA - WLAN not turning on / Unable to install WLAN

Can anyone help with my problem here? I've been trying for three days straight and still unable to find a solution.

My laptop, Satelite L650 PSK1JA-07E017 hasn't been able to connect to wireless recently.

I just reformatted my laptop again today (due to other problems) and now I found out
1. Initially, my toshiba (Out-of-Box-state) laptop has no WLAN driver installed, as the moment I checked Network Sharing Center, I only can see LAN (Atheros Ethernet AR81). (How did I connect into wireless all this time?!)

2. So knowing this, I tried to download several drivers (Atheros/Broadcom) WLAN, however.

The Atheros WLAN driver seem doesn't want to install. The moment I run the setup, nothing happened.
The Broadcom WLAN (802.11n) actually worked once, however the moment I restarted my laptop, Broadcom disappeared from the Network Adapter list

Both driver were taken from main website "Download" Support

I have been trying to find a solution, sometimes the broadcom WLAN works, sometimes it doesn't, at least until today.

Even if it works, it would connect to the Network only for about 5 minutes or so, and after that, the connection would go "Unable to connect"

Now today

1. The wireless network light wont even turn on (That orange light). The moment it would blink is the moment I turned on my computer, but after the TOSHIBA Screen (The screen where you choose to go to your BIOS setting/BOOT), the light suddenly turned off.

2. And when this light is turned off, I'm unable to enable it, as there's no WLAN driver on my computer (Heck, how does the light turn on?!). So FN + F8 Button is totally disabled.

3. No matter how many times I install WLAN driver, it's either

Setup didn't do anything, no response, nothing happened (Atheros WLAN driver, all of them)
Setup worked but wont be listed as Network Adapter.

4. I saw a forum answer talking about TBSWireless that's located in Toshiba folder, I tried and there's no response at all, nothing happened, nothing popp'ed up.

I used to think that it's caused by overheating, but apparently I don't think it's the cause anymore (as my laptop is totally cold right now)

This problem first time happened a year ago, but never pop up again until this year. Normally it's just reseting Network Adapter and it's all fixed. However, given now I don't have WLAN driver (Hence my connection is a box with red cross) there's nothing I can do. I can't install it, nor I can't do a single thing about it.

If there's something that I need to install first (before installing those WLAN driver) can anyone outline that for me?

and apparently my warranty has expired sometime last year so I can't really ask Toshiba to repair it (Unless I pay)

What happens with troubleshooter? I'm guessing that's not been any help when running that.

Don't you need VAP for function keys to work properly?

I would try booting Ubuntu from USB or DVD (you can download from 3GB to 18GB). The networking works out of the box, great for diagnosing whether your issues are hardware related or windows related.

The troubleshoot currently only ask me to connect with ethernet cable
and yes.. for the button, normally i would need vap. However I am sure enough that
nothing is wrong with the VAP.. as the f8 + fn button would come out the moment the orange light is on.

Today morning, the orange light suddenly turned on, and broadcom wlan is
listed on network adapter. However it doesn't last long as
it suddenly got disconnected (no net access. limited connection)
And if i were to troubleshoot, it would pead me to freeze.
The moment i restarted, broadcom is not on network adapter list anymore. (and probably is because the orange wifi light is no more on)
I assume something is wrong with the wi fi, not the driver, however I'm quite unsure..

Regarding that ubuntu thingie, i am quite unfamiliar with these.
can you tell me step by step how to do that?

Installing Ubuntu is WAY easier than windows, same for installing packages (additional software ; although I doubt you'll need to do that).

Two choices:

1) Use WUBI (Windows Ubuntu Installer) which is just like installing another windows application on your harddrive. I have this, works great and still good for diagnosing h/w issues. It makes a dual boot menu so that you can choose windows 7 or Ubuntu from boot up.

Start download, run installer... follow prompts, easy. No mess no fuss.

Just go for recommended settings. My initial installation was 18GB but you can go for smaller if you want.

Side note: The application installer is an icon half way down on the left hand side in case you need to install anything additonal. I don't think you will, unless you want to play with Ubuntu.

2) Install onto USB or CD and boot onto that.

Go for version 11.10 (latest version), 32-bit (recommended).

Either 1) or 2) will do the job. 1) is probably marginally less work.. you can't really call installing Ubuntu work. If installing windows was like installing Ubuntu no-one would have any problems.

OK. Once you re-start and boot into Ubuntu the network icon is on the top-right. Looks a bit like a triangle.

You shouldn't need to read them though, just follow the on-screen instructions the installer gives you and then treat Ubuntu (once you boot into it) it as if it's like windows.

If just I could turn on the WLAN power button manually like the old laptops or preventing Broadcom driver to disappear from my Network Driver list....

Yes but my point is that Linux uses different drivers to Windows 7, so it's unlikely to be that unless the out-of-the-box Ubuntu install doesn't support your card. I have Atheros for both Wi-fi and LAN and it worked fine.

Can't remember though if I ran the automatic update first (drivers, apps etc).. I might have. The drivers might not be installed by default. That's something you could try. It's as simple (if not simpler) than running windows update.

On some Toshiba models the WLAN key is just a software switch and others it's a hardware switch. It's probably hardware in yours.

I've just found (by a bit of browsing on my new Toshiba laptop) that there's a Toshiba HW Setup utility where you can enable/disable the WLAN state manually.

Run 'HWSetup' in start->all programs->toshiba->utilities.

Click on 'LAN' tab, then click 'enabled' for 'Built-in LAN'. Then apply. The changes take effect when you reboot.

I think that HWSetup (above) should be your solution AND then having the correct driver.

The F8 key not working is more a VAP problem. The key itself is no doubt a software implementation, even if the setting is in hardware.

Sorry took me so long to find that. I'm still exploring my new Toshiba L750 that I bought a couple of weeks ago and my last Toshiba didn't have built in WLAN,

Once again, badhat, thanks for the response.

Sadly the HWSetup had it's LAN enabled (Except Wake up LAN, which wouldn't be a good idea to enable it)
I disabled and re-enabled and it's a zero result. Well zero sounds harsh, I would thanks you that this might be a good reference if something happened to my other toshiba laptop though.

Now I've been wondering if my laptop just don't have WLAN inbuilt or something (That would be weird if it doesn''t since I was able to connect to it just a while ago)

The only thing I've been wondering

Could overheat actually caused the Adapter to turn off permanently?
I've been thinking since this actually don't happen when I put a big fan under this laptop. (I couldn't use the fan since there's no space for it at the moment, so I'm putting this laptop on a table, not forgetting that the laptop is quite dusty. I tried to open the inside, however I'm unable to un-screw the last screw which is blocked by CD/DVD Drive)

Apparently I have ordered a USB WIFI, so I would say thanks for assisting me.

If overheat actually can cause that, would you mind posting me how to open this laptop (a guidebook or something)

Yes over-heating could damage any of the components including the WLAN and permanently burn-out the chip or make it only work intermittently when it is cold or warm but not hot.

Google 'satellite L650 maintenance pdf' and you will find what you want. You are lucky I know where things are.

Section 4 has instructions for dis-assembly.

I would not advise to take apart your otherwise working laptop unless you are very experienced as you can easily damage something else, even through just touching with static electricity.

Getting a USB WLAN is the cheapest option and saves you having to open the computer.

If you do decide to try to fix the WLAN, I don't know how it is arranged but check the paste on the heat-sink/fan for the WLAN has not come away from the board. A couple of times I had to refix the paste for my graphics processor heat-sink to make it work again.

Once they are dead they are dead though. You have to catch the problem early. Maybe you had this problem one year ago.

The one thing you can do to make sure your laptop stays healthy is to clean out the fluff from the fan.
