Tecra S5-15Q: HDD password and mainboard dead

Hi,

I have BBBIIIG trouble. few days ago my tecrca s5 tells me "PCI Express error" and displays horizontal strips. Now i can't do anythink with this computer (warranty void). Ok .

I have 2 another computers and when i try use it with hdd from toshiba .
It tells me that hdd password is incorrect, but I use it for 3 years day by day and never change!!!!!!.
Technical support in Poland is on the floor level. What is with this hdd??

What can i do to use my password with MY HDD.

Please help.

I searched in Toshiba pages for some info regarding the HDD password and found this interesting document:

TOSHIBA HDD Password summary

According to the information in both documents the unknown or forgotten HDD password cannot be deleted.
If you are 100% sure that you use a right HDD password then it could be possible that you have mistyped the password. This is only plausible explanation…

I using this password very often and I now when need capslock etc.

I found in the internet that some manfacturers encrypt hdd password and bios save to hdd encrypted password that this hdd works only with 1 computer .

This is question to person who now it or used 1 hdd (hitachi SATA) with set password (master password) in 2 diferent toshiba laptops: Does Toshiba Tecra S5 encrypt hdd password?

This is very inportant for me because I cant work.....

I tryed unlock this hdd on 2 dells - laptop e6400 and desktop and both tells me that my password is incorrect. Pointless.......

Sorry but your posting is best evidence how secure are data if the notebook is stolen. No data access and HDD is theoretically and practically useless.

I want access my data on another computer.

I don’t think this will work. If something like this would be possible it would be easy to hack password and have full access to saved data.

Unfortunately I cannot help you with this. All I know is that HDD password is saved on HDD directly and cannot be deleted on some conventional way.
It’s very pity if Toshiba service provider cannot help you with this.

Anyway, I hope you will find a way to get around this issue. Try to contact some specialists for data saving or data recovering.

Heh i dont worry that my data lost... In worst case i spent this 1000PLN (230€) to fix this s!@# mainboard and then go back working hdd.

But i hope that is another way to solve this problem.

Dr.Lamp: hdd password isn't good method to protect data because data i is still written on hdd and no encrypted. Hdd password protect access to some functions hdd frmware only. But of course this is effective protect against stupid thief.

Hi

Generally speaking the protected HDD with an HDD password could be used in other notebook but then you have to put the right HDD password. But in your case I assume that there is some issue between the HDD and the BIOS on the notebooks from other manufacturer. I would assume that you should be able to unlock the HDD using the Tecra S5

Yesterdey i retrieve my data from locked hdd. It was possible because my toshiba starts and allow to input password to unlock hdd. I broke hdd SATA connector and connect to disk external power supply. After unlock I replaced data cable and copy data on another computer.
HDD is usless because i cant enter to bios to disble hdd password.

Conclusion:

Toshiba encrypt hdd password before write it to hdd (and this is not ok). If you use this function there is high risk that you lost access to all your data on hdd.
