Hi there,

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro L650 and I am having some problems.

it all started a couple of weeks ago, I received the dreaded black screen of death (windows would boot, but then just come up with a black screen and a mouse cursor. After much playing around, I thought a re-install of windows would do the trick.

It worked, but none of my drivers were installed.. After much searching, I found my Toshiba repair disc. I put it in and went to fix it. Half way through formatting the drive, it came up with an error, saying that it could not delete a certain file, it then asked me to reset.

So I reset, and it came up with a screen with "This drive is not initialized, please initialize now"
So I pressed yes, and it it reset, but came up with the same screen. and over and again.

So, that's where I am at. It's only a year old, and i've already had the hard-disk replaced. I am desperate to fix, I don't want it to become an expensive paper-weight..

First of all I’m wondering why the message appeared saying that the drive is not initialized… did you use the Toshiba recover disk for the OS installation or did you use any other Windows disk?

At the other hand it could be possible that your HDD malfunctions… the blinking cursor in the left upper corner is one sign for such fault…
Therefore I would recommend checking the HDD. Use a tool like Drive Fitness Test for example… it helps you to check the HDD…
If some errors will appear then the HDD should be replaced…

Hi Paolo,

I had of course, lost my Toshiba repair disk, then found my windows 7 disc and used that to install..

I have tried to download the software you had advised, and others, but a curious thing is happening.

I have changed the boot settings to USB first (the USB has the software on it) and it comes up with a black screen, and beeps loudly at me when I press a button. same thing happens if I boot from the hard-drive first (basically anything except the toshiba repair disc)

the actual hard-drive shows in bios, so it is being recognised, it's still coming up with not initialized.

So I can't seem to run anything else apart from the Toshiba repair disc, which keeps throwing me back to the same screen over and again.

…and did you run a diagnostic test using the Drive Fitness Test?

If the HDD is recognized in BIOS then this means that the HDD should be ok but possibly there is something wrong with the partitions table on the HDD.
Maybe you could try to remove the HDD and could connect the HDD to other computer using an external USB controller. This would allow you to format the HDD and to create a new partitions.
Would be interesting to know if this would help…

I cant seem to run a fitness test at all. I have tried a USB bootable and dvd bootable version of the drive fitness test. All that happens is I get a black screen, with a white underline at the top, and 4 white dots at the top of the screen. nothing happens after this.

I tried to then install my windows 7 that I have purchased, and it goes past the 'windows is loading files...' section, then all I get is a black screen, and you can vaguely see the loading bar, and Microsoft Corporation logo (very vaguely).

then nothing else happens after that.

I have another toshiba laptop (an a200) but I'm not sure how to put the l650 hard-drive into another computer.

The laptop still shows the hdd being there in bios.

I do appreciate the help you guys are trying to provide, so thank you.

Well, strange… usually this should work… maybe the HDD malfunction and this is the reason why the test does not start… the HDD might be faulty even if it’s recognized by BIOS…

If HDD is faulty then this would not help you… but here are some tips how to replace the HDD on different notebooks:

Mostly the HDD replacement is very similar for all notebooks.
