Thanks for the testing, if your temps are below 80°C it's normal you don't have it, that's probably where the threshold is. I wonder why my temps are so high though... Do you all have a cooler ? I think I might get one too, it seems to reduce the temp by ~10°C if I understood correctly so then everything would be fine.

i used to game @92 celcius on bios 1.10 before i dusted my laptop, so i dont think there was a threshold anywhere in the 1.10 :P

I am using a Coolermaster U3 coolerpad , i think it helps although the base structure of X770 is not adapting 100% to the pad , but still i think that any good coolerpad helps a bit with temperatures even if there is a gap from laptop's base to the pad base.

CoolerMaster U3 scratched the underneath of my notebook (with those fans' plastic clips) so I've replaced it.
Now I use Thermaltake Massive23 LX which barely fits this laptop, but it consistently lowers CPU temperatures by 5-10°C. I try to fit it so the air gets underneath the left speaker... That's where CPU is, I guess.
Anyway, my max. temperatures so far (without cooling pad) are 73°C for GPU and 92°C for CPU. Temperatures usually reside below 70°C for GPU and around 85°C for CPU, depending on the game.
Of course, no problems with BIOS 1.70.

ok got my notebook back today, tested it now with bf3.

results STILL throtteling! (even on lowest graphic settings)

toshiba told me that all was ok with hardware and they just cleaned up the cooler(seemed to be dirty) they reinstalled bios(1.70)

it's much better now but still heavy throttle after 30mins.

->will test now with other games and report back, but seems like toshiba still has to work on the x770

fixed.

my solution was the new nvidia driver 296.10
+disable the cpu turbo boost in bios and now all running fine

Did you check if throttling happens at ~80°C GPU temperature like me? Other people don't seem to hit this temperature and therefore they don't get it. Maybe this is an issue with this older model that I have, I don't know. I'll test the new drivers and report back, but for disabling CPU turbo boost that might also lower the performance no?

Well, I think you were right about the driver, definitely seeing an improvement on the temps using 296.10 instead of 295.73. No more hitting 80°C with LA Noire, everything seems to be a lot cooler than before. Didn't even have to disable turbo boost, I'll do some more testing and report back but so far no more throttling.

Just tried the new Nvidia drivers 301.24 Beta, and with bios 1.70 the throttling strikes back. So dont install the new drivers yet, maybe the WHQL will fix the problem...

Well all, I too own one of these Qosmios X770 (PSBY5A-00X01D) Had it for 5 months now and has ran COD4 fine with console FPS 125. Did drop down a little depending on map etc. But the last week all of a sudden without any PC changes will play for 5-10 mins then the FPS start to drop until going all the way down to around 20FPS which is obviously unplayable. I press the windows button, wait till fan noise reduces a little & go back in & get another 5-10 mins sometimes till it happens all over!! Why all of sudden has this started. Now after reading this thread there are alot of ideas. I havnt yet updated either my bios or Nvidia drivers sinse buying it. Gave it a little blow out from dust which seemed to work a little but still performance stuffing up. Now I read somewhere about how you should'nt upgrade drivers off Nvidia site as they not tailored towards the Toshiba & temps can rise etc. However the Toshiba site only has version 268.85 whilst Nvidia has 296.1 (says mine is 268.51). Any help or advise would be appreciated. Nathan

Well, Nathan B, we all here have been through this.. My advice is to download from the official Toshiba website the BIOS 1.70 and install it, its easy, you can do it from windows. And then go to the official Nvidia web site and download the latest drivers for your GPU which are the 296.10! the throttling should dessapear.

thanks leon, as always you keep us up to date, with the most important aspect of our gaming centres - the GPU

i will postpone updating the drivers then, as I am running 1.7 + 296 and as a matter of fact actually enjoying the performance
