Portege R700-15P - Cannot use recovery cd on SSD 64 GB
Posted: 29-Jun-2011 07:13

Hi,

I'm replacing my HDD to a lower size 64GB SSD.

Unfortunately i cannot run the recovery cd, it stuck with error "not enough space".

I found that i got stuck when it try to create the DATA partition (to store the HDDRecovery)

Any help is very much appreciated.

Thanks
Akuma

Is the SSD detected in the BIOS? Maybe the system can't initialize the SSD properly.

What SSD brand and model is it?

Please don’t create any partitions if you want to use recovery image. Before recovery installation starts partitions will be created automatically and recovery image will be copied on SSD automatically too. So please don’t do anything.

Start recovery installation, follow menu on the screen and just choose factory state installation.

Thanks for replying,

Akuma - it's Kingston V100 64GB, i didn't check the bios, but installation can detect the SSD along with its size properly.

Macius - I didn't get the chance to select any option, it's automatic recover. The SSD is clean format with no partition.

Is there any way i can modify the setting to specify WINDOWS & DATA partition size?

Thanks.

As Macius already wrote with recovery installation all runs automatically and, as far as I know, you cannot define partitions capacity. You can do this later using disc management.

Ave you tried to use original Microsoft installation disc?

Yes Andrej, i've tried with MS original Win 7 Ultimate, and installation was successful.

But the portege comes with Win 7 Pro, and i need to install from restore CD if possible to get all the drivers running.

Hi buddy,

If you install Windows from restore CD (Toshiba recovery disk) all drivers and tools will be installed automatically. You get factory settings back so you have the same settings as purchased your notebook.

After recovery installation you can change the partitions using Disk Management tool of Windows if you don’t like the standard values.

hi PinkPanther,

The problem is i couldn't even get the chance to install using the restore cd.

It gave out error not enough disk space.

I need to find out if we can specify disk space in the restore setting, or bypass the creation of DATA partition during the restore.

Thanks

I think that’s not possible. Recovery installation has standard values and there is no option to change this.

Have you noticed the same behavior with preinstalled HDD?

What you could do is restoring the factory settings on old HDD. After successful installation on HDD use an image tool like Acronis True Image and clone the HDD onto SSD. This should work and you have factory settings to on SSD.
