Hello there

I have just purchased a R700-184 and the plan is to sling W7 Ultimate 64-bit, 8gb of ram and a SSD into it

my question is as its a HDD as standard, what are the limitations and issues i'm likely to encounter carrying out this upgrade?

thanks in advance

Ben

Hi

There is no big difference between the SSD and HDD so usually the notebook should be able to handle SSD SATA drive properly.
In some cases a firmware update for SSD drive is needed but usually this is provided by SSD drive manufacturer…

As long as that R700 has a standard 2.5" HDD, you can replace it with almost any current 2.5" SATA SSD.

If a particular SSD doesn't work then it may have a compatibility problem, usually fixable by updating it's firmware.

Hi 1994F7PT,

I agree with the users above. There is no difference between HDD and SSD because both disks using the same connector and interface: Serial ATA.

So it’s no problem to replace the current HDD with an SSD also there is no capacity limits. So just buy the SSD that you like and enjoy it. :)

thanks folks, i know the drive would physically fit and the interface was the same but i wasnt sure if certain brands had known issues and certain capacities was all. i've heard some issues with drvie sizes over 120GB

one further question, is the R700 SATAII or SATAIII?

thanks again

I've got a OCZ Vertex 2 (Sandforce based SSD) and it's flakey as hell.

Sometimes it boots up fine, other times it just hangs. OCZ blame Toshiba Bios, and Toshiba don't acknowledge it's a problem. So it's stalemate until someone addresses the issue...

I believe the R700 is SATA II since it has the Calpella chipset.

From what I understand, SATA III was introduced in the new Sandy Bridge platform.

But it doesn't matter because SATA is backwards and forwards compatible, and most SSD's don't exceed SATA II's 300mbit/s bandwidth.

see this is not the first time i've heard about issues like these and thats whats worrying me

i dont know if its just ocz's that cause the issue but its always those series of drives in question, but again this may be a popularity thing, most aftermarket SSD's that people buy seem to be ocz's :-)
