No audio output device is installed on my Satellite U300
Posted: 18-Feb-2011 12:18

I have a Satellite U300 running Windows Vista 32. The sound worked fine until last week.
But now I have a red cross over the speaker icon on the taskbar. I have tried reinstalling the driver from Toshiba/Realtek but the sound is not restored.
(At least the Realtek driver now shows in Control Panel under 'Sound' - there was nothing there before.) I have also tried Windows Updates and in particular KB 92 96 85 since this was recommended on another forum. It made no difference. If I go to Device Manager no Sound is listed.

Does anyone have any ideas? It seems to be a common problem with Toshiba Satellites and some other brands and I am surprised there is nothing in the forums here.
Thanks
xaver

Hi mate

Please take a look here:
Audio muted (no sound) after installing Windows Vista
http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB7C021B0001R01.htm

You will need to install the patch which is posted in the Toshiba document
Then the sound should appear again.

No - at least I don't think so. The only one that I don't recognise is a Realtec RTL8101 PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC network adapter but it could have been there since the laptop was new

This is LAN card. You have to install LAN driver

Regarding sound:
What to say; try to delete the sound card in device manager. Reboot the unit and the OS should recognize the deleted card again.
If it does not help, :( reinstall the Vista again…

PauPau, Thank you. Annoyingly there is no sound card shown in the device manager.
Reloading Vista - can I do this without losing everything on the hard drive?

Hi fmcder,

Reloading Vista - can I do this without losing everything on the hard drive?
That means you can reinstall Vista from Toshiba recovery disk, right?

Well, in this case the recovery disk will wipe the whole HDD so you will lose everything and you should do a backup of your important files if you didn’t do this already. After this you can copy the files back onto your notebook.
I would recommend an external HDD for backups.

After backup your data start with Vista installation from recovery disk. It will restore the original factory settings so all drivers and tools are installed and your notebook will be ready to use again. :)

Thanks - and sorry not to reply sooner but school half term intervened.

Reloading Windows sounds a little drastic. Is this why people buy Macs?

I'll have to buy a new external HDD then try it.

Helpful
I've been suffering with this problem, and am far from computer savvy. I found the following advice on another forum:-

Go to My Computer
then click system settings
go to advanced settings
click on the hardware tab
click device installation settings
Then select "Yes,do this automatically" and click save settings

I followed this more or less, and it made no difference but I found that if I went into the advanced settings and into the hardware tab I could go into device manager and it recognised the audio on the computer. When I expanded the audio, and double clicked on the Realtek device it brought up properties and I went onto the driver tab and disabled the audio, the enabled it again and it works, for how long I don't know but its the only thing thats worked for me so far.

Hope this helps.

smoggette23 - thank you for this. My trouble is that there is no audio device listed in Device Manager so I cannot do what you suggest!

The advice you give from the forum leads me back to Device Manager and I do not have an option to click device installation settings. I can choose to get Windows to update driver settings but so far this has not helped.

Xardas,
I did reinstall Windows from the recovery disk but still get the red X over the sound icon and the message "No Audio Output Device is installed".
Any other ideas?

Hi fmcder
Did you ever get a solution to this problem. I have the same problem but mine comes and goes. I had good sound until about a month ago. Then there were gravelly sounds from the speakers and the device manager showed no audio output device is installed. About a week ago the sound suddenly returned and last night it did the gravel sound and off again.
Is there anyone out there that can help?
TIA
Pedro

Hi Pedro
No, I did a windows "fixit" late yesterday and closed down. When I rebooted this morning sound was back on. This is the second time. Any idea why this might be happening?
Thanks
I should say that the windows fixit came back with the msg you have no audio output device installed so i dont know whether it was the fixit that fixed it or not
