NB100 - HDD issue?

Hi all,

I was copying data with my NB100 from an external HD to another, when suddenly the laptop switched off.
I could smell something near the fan (not exctly burnt, but this was the feeling) and now the computer doesn't start again. When I boot it, it makes some noises (Meeeec Meeec Meeec) and the HD light on the front of the laptop start flashing.

Do you know what can be happening?
I thought there was a "misterious" HD failure but I'm not sure. I guess the data is unrecoverable now...

Thanks

PS: I guess it could also be the motherboard (?). If anyone has a suggestion please I need some help.

Hi,

it's not easy to say what really happens but as you mentioned about the smell might be somethings burnt inside of laptop. Theoretically, you can remove hdd and try to enter bios if you will be able to check if hdd recognized. maybe, there was short-circuit in the system when the external hdd was connected ( Sometimes, it can happen.........). Anyway, if it's under warranty, you should contact the asp (service center). but don't tell them that it happened connecting the external hdd :)

I guess its HDD issue.
You can try to run some tests.

There is a nice HDD test tool called “Drive Fitness test”.
Is for free and can be downloaded from different pages.

This tool creates a bootable disk which checked the HDD.
If the test will not run successfully, then the HDD is dead and you will need a new one.

Thank you all for the answer.
Now I am wondering if it wouldn't be a problem of overheating or energy related (related to the mother board).

The thing is, I was trying to boot from a CD to check the HD as you suggested. Usually the computer doesn't even switch on when pressing the button but this time it started and (as I forgot to configure the boot from CD) it started Windows! So the HD "apparently" is OK. I just could get to the desktop and then the computer suddenly switched off like the 1st time.

I pressed again the power button but nothing happend. I unpluged the energy cable, removed the battery, connect them again and it started... but again after the login it switched suddenly off. Now I'm not able to make it start.

This could ring a bell?

I'm trying to cool the machine down and will try later on. At least if I could do a backup...
