Portege R700: Cannot use both HDMI SVGA on Port replicator PA3838E-1PRP

Dear All,

I have a Portege R700 (PT311E) series and a high speed port replicator with P/N PA3838E-1PRP.

I have tried today to connect two external monitors, one on VGA port and the second on HDMI port from the port replicator.
Unfortunately I was not able to configure laptop/port replicator to work with booth external monitors.

Failing to work in this way booth laptop and port replicator becomes useless.
Although this is a facility by default on other manufactures without any drivers and special settings to be needed, I hope that in our case a key combination or a driver can fix this problem.

To be even more specific, I do not want to use also laptop's display.I just want to plug in laptop closed and turned off into the port replicator, to power on the laptop from the on/off button of the port replicator and to have the immage on the two external monitors.

What R700-xxx do you have exactly?

How did you connect the both monitors? Are the two monitors connected only to Port Replicator or is one of the monitor connected to notebook and the other monitor is connected to port replicator?

Could you please post this?

I’m not quite sure about HDMI and Port Replicator (PA3838E-1PRP) but many notebooks equipped with DVI port support the dual video output (VGA and DVI) using Advanced Port Replicator III (PA3314E-1PRP) or Advanced Port Replicator III plus (PA3474E-1PRP).
But this is just possible if the notebook itself support RGB & DVI simultaneous usage too.

The exact model is R700-194.

Booth monitors are connected to the port replicator. One on the VGA connector and the second one to HDMI connector. I have applications using the dual display capabilities. It will be hard for me to accept that a configuration I am using on other brand on more that 4 years old HW can not be replicated on current Toshiba technology.

Regarding the post, will try to search if laptop is able to work on booth video output - in this case VGA and HDMI. I will check also my old configuration but however this will not help because we are comparing different technologies.

Hi,

I tried it before and it was no problem to use 1 monitor with VGA and the 2 with HDMI.
Than the internal screen of the notebook stays dark. It is not possible to use 3 screens, if you connect HDMI and VGA on the port replicator.

I started the R700 and docked in. Than I connected the VGA screen and afterwards the HDMI screen.
Than you must press Fn + F5. So you can swith between the different monitor settings.

You can choose between: HDMI + VGA / HDMI + LCD / VGA + LCD

Problem has been solved.

I think it was related to drivers or the way WXP has accepted the Port replicator.
When I have first tried, pressing Fn+F5 I have received 3 options related to laptop display and single external monitor.

Most probably at that moment despite the fact that laptop has been inserted in port replicator, the external video ports has not been detected. I have reinserted couple of times without success.

Today I have reinserted laptop in port replicator and finally I have received more options including the ones I was interested.

Either contact problem or drivers problem.
