Fact is that Toshiba doesn’t support Linux OS for this notebook model so with all this you are on your own.
I recommend you to visit some Linux forum and try to pick up some useful info from there. Maybe you will find there other people with the same notebook who want to install Linux.

You can installed 10.04.1 (or alternatively, install 10.10 and downgrade to the 2.6.32 kernel), the OS works great on this machin.

Note : under Windows and Linux, this laptop heat a bit

Portege's are, in my experience, hot machines. The cooling modules is on the very limit of being able to cool the system effectively. I have seen quite a few issues with Linux and this series of notebook with the latest Kernel version. I can only suggest using the downgraded version until more support is either available from Toshiba (highly unlikely) or the Linux Kernel.

Hi all

For situations when Windows locks up and the unit starts blowing the fan wildly, it may be solved by upgrading the fingerprint software as described in this document:
Link: http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB0C032L0000R01.htm

If the hangs exists in Linux I would think this may be related to either a kernel issue or a BIOS.
Please make sure to have the latest BIOS'es in your units and also use a late kernel.

I have successfully been running Fedora 14 on my R630 for almost 1 year and have no issues as mentioned in this thread.
On the contrary - it runs very very well!

Cheers
