Satellite Pro 4600 Unable to load updated BIOS
Posted: 07-Sep-2010 22:46

Satellite Pro 4600. When starting up I reach the Windows 2000 screen and then get the blue screen "The ACPI BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant . Please contact etc etc for updated BIOS". I have downloaded the BIOS update version 2.60 from the Toshiba site and installed it with a "successfully installed" message. I still get the "blue" screen. Where am I going wrong? Help would be appreciated.

Is there possibility to start OS in safe mode? Does this works properly?

Have you made clean Win2000 installation?
Give us more info.

Thanks for response. Starting in safe mode results in same problem. I have also tried re-installing Windows 2000 which seems to go through ok but then goes to the dreaded blue screen.

Contains W2000 Service Packs or not?
Have you tried to install WXP?

I loaded the original Toshiba Recovery CD-ROM which formatted the hard disk and then installed Windows 2000, apparently successfully. However I still get the blue screen insisting that the BIOS is not compliant and that an update is required. As previously mentioned I have updated the BIOS and got a message that it had been successfully installed.

Hi

I’m not quite sure how the BIOS settings looks like on this oldie but try to access the BIOS and set it to default. Then (if possible) change the ACPI option in BIOS.

I checked the Toshiba US page for the drivers and BIOS for Satellite Pro 4600.
I found it here: Satellite Pro 4600

There you would find the Toshiba ACPI Common Modules for Windows 98, ME, 2000 and for Win XP… I think you need this tool.
There is also an Toshiba BIOS/CMOS Setup program for Toshiba portable computers. This DOS program displays and allows you to set the CMOS/BIOS settings of your Toshiba portable computer. Maybe it helps you to change the ACPI option in BIOS.

Thanks for your interest in my problem. I downloaded the common module as suggested but the read me text for installation says to Start W2000 and Run My Computer or Explorer. As mentioned when the laptop boots up it gets to the "Starting Windows" page, shows the W2000 page for a second and then defaults to the blue screen "Bios needs updating. It seems therefore that I cannot instal this download. If I press Escape followed by F1 I get the BIOS page which shows it as being the latest Toshiba version 2.60. I have used the Toshiba Recovery disk which formats the HD and then installs a fresh W2000. When installation is complete the laptop automatically re-boots with the same problem - blue screen. Any futher thoughts would be appreciated.

Wait a moment. Does this means you have installed W2000 as original Toshiba recovery image you got with your notebook?

Fact is that delivered recovery image is designed for certain notebook model and if there is no hardware problem it must work. So I’m presuming there is some hardware problem.

I have noticed the same on my old Portege 2000. I can install recovery image sucessfuly but after first start BSOD is shown. I have tried to install own WXp, exchanged HDD. No chance. I presume some controller on motherboard is defective.

Hi

The strange thing is that the W2k can be installed using the recovery disk and after that the BSOD appears.
I don’t think it could be related to hardware problem because in such case the W2k would not install.

I think it’s OS issue… As mentioned above; try to set BIOS to default. Save the changes and try to reboot again…
Try also an Win XP OS…

Thanks for the responses. The only XP disks available to me are vendor specific (Mesh/Dell) and will not load into the Toshiba machine. I have found a Toshiba bulletin which says that I need to install the Recovery Console by typing C:\I386\WINNT32.EXE\CMDCONS into the command line. Unfortunately I am unable to get to the command line. When I press F8 and select Safe Mode with command prompt, I am immediately taken to the blue Bios update message screen. I guess I will have to give up!

Hey old Microsoft WXp installation disc you can buy on eBay. It is not expensive anymore, especially old versions.
Buy it and install WXP without SPs or with SP1 only.

All WXP drivers are available on Toshiba download page.
