Tecra M11-S3410 Frequent Freezes Win7
Posted: 10-Jun-2010 14:36

Hello all,

I just got off the phone with Tech Support and was suggested to either re-format or send the laptop in for repair. This machine is critical to the organization and wanted to first see what other suggested options are available.

My issue with the laptop is that the machine will lockup and the fan will spin fast and audibly. The system is warm but not hot as if there was overheating. Only solution from here is to cold boot and restart the device. This happens almost daily.

Most of the applications running on this PC include QuickBooks 2007, MS Office Applications 2007, and FireFox 3.X. The last lockup happened when only Outlook and Firefox were open. Event viewer isn't proving to be very helpful.

Is there a utility I can run to check software compatibility, or are there any ideas as what diagnostic tests can be ran on this system?

TIA,
Jer

Before you would send the notebook to ASP I would recommend to recover the notebook back to factory settings.
Fact is that notebook or OS can freezes due to software or hardware problems. And therefore notebook should be recovered in order to check if it’s not software related problem.

These sounds like a higher temperature would affect the notebook functionality.
Maybe this is the reason for system freezing.
Maybe dust and debris clog the cooling fans/grilles.

Please check if you could remove dust using compressed air spray… this should helps.
But if it’s not overheating issue then an technician should check the hardware.

I'd be interested if anyone else is experiencing this? I have a new Tecra M11 -m and I am experiencing exactly the same issue. I've already factory reset this box to repartition it and due to a problem installing Visio. Every day or so, it freezes and the fan starts running at full speed. Nothing useful in the event logs and only a power off fixes it. I thought it was the Toshiba eco software and removed that but no joy. Sometimes it locks up when I'm using it and sometimes when its left for an hour or so. The latter makes me think that something related to power save is causing it. I can't find any more driver or software updates to apply and I have the latest BIOS.

So, is it a duff box or common to this platform?

Hi

Did you run an memory test?
Do it…

You could also test the notebook with one memory module only…
Maybe it’s a memory issue…

I am the network administrator for a smaller company, and just purchased 6 of the Tecra M11-S3430 laptops.

I did a clean install of Windows 7 Enterprise, installed all the drivers and every one of them locks up. No rhyme or reason as to why they are doing it. One person will be trying to send an email, another will be in an excel spreadsheet and still another just browsing the web.

In every event, the systems freeze, the fan spools up, and a hard boot is needed. These are all brand new systems, they have the I5 series processor, 3gb ram.

There isnt anything special installed on these, just your usual business apps like office.

I did not use any ghosting software either. Each one was set up/installed manually.

Is there a hardware issue with these laptops?

I doubt its hardware issue… did you test how the notebook would work using the Toshiba preinstalled system?
As already suggested above, this should be done definitely in order to check if it could be software or hardware related issue.

Set the BIOS to default settings and ensure that you are using a latest version!

Tecra M11-S3430 is an Toshiba US notebook series… for driver download use the Toshiba US page…

has anybody solved this issue yet ?

As we have ordered 2 M11's with an I7 processor and both of them lock up for no reason. It also locks up at the toshiba splash screen and in the BIOS, so this is not OS related.

I have had a Toshiba Engineer replace a motherboard already and it seems to be worse than before....it even locked up whilst typing on this thread!

Ideas anyone ?

I got a new Tecra M11 with Win7 and i5 core. It freezes daily especially when I use it while I'm in transit (on the train)...I've been searching for solution offered by Toshiba especially in this forum but it seems that I have to send this back for repair (or testing) which I can't afford at the moment since I need the laptop everyday and we don't have spare ones in the office....What a disappointment this is!

What does it means exactly? This happen especially with battery power supply or using mobile Internet connectivity? How to understand this?

In this thread everyone has posted one time and gone. What does this means? Is problem solved or what?
Tecra M11 is designed for business purposes so I can imagine many people need some third part applications or different “specific settings” so there are many software related reasons that can be responsible for this. I also don't think all described issues are hardware related problems.

hi,

my issue is still eveident and toshiba are no where near fixing it. I have a call open for 3 weeks now and I'm no nearer a fix. The problem, for myself is hardware as it also locks up on the toshiba splash screen and BIOS, which is not related to software.

Toshiba Tecra freezes when in battery supply and when using wireless internet. Lately, it's been happening quite frequently even if i'm not in transit , while it's being used on a desk. I am rebooting the machine on an average of 3-5 times a day.

I've been trying for the last few weeks to get a fix for this. However, I've removed the fingerprint reading software and disabled the fingerprint reader in device manager. This appears to have finally fixed the issue (fingers crossed, one week no crash). I'd also removed Toshiba reeltime and eco utilities but had less success. The various BIOS updates have not helped.

All the latest drivers were installed. I also rebuilt the machine and could not get a crash from it with the factory build though I didn't setup the fingerprint software. USB connections also seemed to have a bearing on stability, though everything has been fine since the fingerprint reader was crippled.

Hope that helps.

Hi solo

And freezing is caused by what?
What are you doing with your Tecra?
What is the OS configuration?

We don’t know nothing except you have freezing problem. How to offer exact diagnostic on this virtual way?

For instance, I have 3 months old Tecra A11 with Win7 64bit OS (recovery image) and it works perfectly.

Try with standard solutions: BIOS update and fingerprint software update.
