External USB hard drive not recognized by Satellite Win XP
Posted: 16-Mar-2009 23:03

My Satellite S105 running Windows XP professional SP3 works fine with any external solid-state drives.

Yet my Seagate Freeagent external USB harddrive is visible sometimes and not others. The Seagate is working fine except when invisible to Windows. Deleting USB drivers (re-installed by windows) does not change this. The drive is not visible in My Computer or elsewhere. Seagate's dirve manager does not detect the drive at these times.

What is the fix?

Thanks.

What form factor is the external HDD? Is it a small 2.5" laptop HDD or is it a large 3.5" Desktop HDD?

Does it use its own power supply? Or is it powered by USB power?

If its powered by USB power, have you plugged in the extra USB connector to increase the Amps to the HDD?

Hello Dall,

SEAGATE had lately a huge hardware problem with their HDD production I read in a magazin.
Never had a problem with mine, but
As owner of one, I downloaded a software bugfix from the SEAGATE website to be safe.

Check the S.No. and check the tech support from SEAGATE

Good luck

The Seagate "Freeagent" harddrive has an external power supply. I plug it in before attaching to the Satellite's enhanced USB port. It worked fine at first but then has been only intermittently recognized by WinXP.

Today, for example, it was recognized once and not now. I have restarted Windows.

Thanks.

Do you have any Network drives?

Sometimes USB drives can hide behind Network Drive letters.

And sometimes the USB Drive letter never appears unless you restart Windows. This used to happen to me all the time, I'm not sure how I fixed it. It might have been the XP Service Pack 3 update.

The drive appears to be working fine at the times it is finally recognized by Windows.

The problem seems to be getting the USB drive recognized on reboot or re-plugging it in.

I have no network drives. I'm using Service Pack 3.

I see the Seagate external drive come up as E or F (if I have a solid-state USB drive in a slot).

Thanks,

Dall

Try changing the Drive Letter to M: or something.

You can do this in Disk Management

Sometimes the CD Filters can interfere with other storage devices

Satellite a105 PSAA8u-omdo2k is the model.
BIOS 6

Until Windows recognizes the USB external drive again, I cannot change the drive name.

Thanks,

I assume other external USB devices (USB flash drive stick, mouse etc…) are working properly and don’t disappear in ‘My Computer’. Is it right?

This would mean that this issue has nothing to do with the notebook or notebook’s USB ports but with your external USB HDD….
Maybe a there is some kind of issue with the USB HDD…. ?:|

I had similar problems until I got into the BIOS of my laptop and turned OFF the USB support, which then allows Windows to be the primary USB control software.

On some systems this might be called "Legacy Support" on others just "On/Off" but when it's on, it MIGHT be interfering with drive recognition especially
on the Seagate drive that comes to life based on access.

Let Windows do the USB support, and turn it off at the BIOS level, I hope this helps.

running XP, replace newer drive with an older small capacity drive, then try your new drive again, not exactly sure why this works but it will have something to do with disk subsystem recognition. I had drives that weren't being recognized by either usb or firewire. All good now.
Cheers all
