Create a recovery USB from the recovery CD provided - SOLUTION
Posted: 19-Jan-2009 04:18

You don't have to buy and external CD/DVD to use the recovery CD provided. I assume you all have access to a computer with a CD reader. Also you need to buy a 2GB USB flash memory.

Using any other computer with either a linux or win OS - Insert the CD and create an .iso image file of that CD using any CD/DVD writer application provided. If you are using Ubuntu or linux in general you can use Brasero CD/DVD writer. Once in Brasero, choose copy CD/DVD and from the drop down menu select image file. Brasero will create an .iso image file and save it on your hard drive in /home/user_name as brasero.iso file.

If you prefer to use the terminal / shell to create an iso file enter these commands:

sudo umount /dev/cdrom

dd if=/dev/cdrom of=file.iso

Now we have created the image file and is sitting on you hard drive. Now we need to create a bootable USB from this image. To do that, download Unetbootin from the link below. It is available for both linux and win.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetbootin/

Once you did download Unetbootin, insert you USB memory (it should be 2GB). Run Unetbootin. Now from the option select the second option - iso image and browse to the location of the file on your hard disk and click open. Then below select the usb stick - in Linux it should something like /dev/sdb1 or /dev/sdc1 - usually it is the name of the drive automatically selected by Unetbootin.

Click on apply or Ok. the bootable USB will be created withing few minutes. Once it is done insert it in your Toshiba NB 100 and start the netbook while pressing on F12, a menu option will show - select USB device and press enter.

Now the machine will boot and Unetbootin start up menu will show - SELECT Recovery and press enter and follow the instructions - and you will be all set. No need to spend extra money for an external CD reader.

I tried this yesterday and works like magic. Good luck.

Hi Karloss,

I have done this as you described. It starts the Toshiba Recovery Software and I can select two options..
1.Recovery of Factory Default Software
2.Erase the hard disk

the point number 2 works perfect (if anyone needs this) BUT point number 1 stops working after the system "initializing the partition" with an error number 20022. It seems that the system can not find any HDD because the HDD LED is not blinking. This will hapen when I recover from DVD.

Maybe I did something wrong. Please help.

I get the same thing with a USB stick, but I haven't tried an external DVD driver yet...

I now know why this does NOT work!
The problem is that the Toshiba Linux recovery needs to boot a LINUX partition and the USB stick has a FAT / FAT32 or NTFS partition.

I found a another way to make it work, but this way is not an easy way.
Use this instruction guide in GERMAN only, please use this LINK

Oh well - I tried this method and ended up with exactly the same problem as the unetbootin method. The system boots, gets as far as "initialising the partition" and after about 30 seconds it fails with error 20022.

The instructions didn't work first time, either. I needed to remove/insert the USB stick, then unmount the drives, before I could format the partitions. I also had to rename the 'vmlinuz' file to 'bzimage' (i.e. the same as on the original install disk) in order to be able to boot from it at all.

Has anyone actually been able to completely re-install the system using a USB stick?

The USB method din't work for me AT ALL. The machine just didn't boot from the USB stick when selected - just went straight into Grub...

I couldn't even look at the files on the stick to rename the 'vmlinuz' file to 'bzimage' as in the post above. Windows wanted to format it, and Remix couldn't mount it....
Think I'm going to have to fork out for a USB DVD drive....

Hi gcogger,

I've written the instruction to create a USB stick for the system recovery. This week I have updated the instruction ( http://www.georgkainzbauer.de/gtkdb/index_7_481.html ) because I've got the information that there are different recovery DVD's available on the market. The current instruction is for the recovery DVD's GMR400881EU0, GMR400890EU1 and GMR400890EU2 and it's working fine to restore the OS with an USB stick.

The error code 20022 means, that the recovery system can't find the recovery image. The first version of my instruction was releated to the GMR400890EU1 recovery DVD, where the recovery image must be available in the folder "/mnt/cdrom". If you have the recovery DVD GMR400881EU0 the image must be available in the folder "/cdrom". Therefore I have modified the instruction to make the image file available in both folders.

I think with the updated instruction you should be able to create a working recovery USB stick.

Please let me know if you have still problems or further questions.

Hi Gendibal,

it seems that your USB stick is not bootable or the Toshiba NB100 doesn't support your USB stick to boot from.
Please check if the first partition on the USB stick is marked as active and you have executed the syslinux command straight after the filesystem was created. If this doesn't solve the problem, please check another USB stick.

Please let me know if you have still problems.

Hi Georg,

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 from a CD (I have an external CD RW drive) and was able to make a bootable USB stick with it. I then got the error 20022 message. I have the GMR400881EU0 recovery disk but I can't read German!
Do I just edit the files on the stick to put a copy of the image in a directory /mnt/cdrom?

Thanks for the update, but I don't think I want to restore Ubuntu on my system now. Sorry :(

I borrowed an external DVD drive and did the restore just to prove that I could get back to the original setup. I have since installed Windows XP on my NB100 and very much prefer it. I have installed and configured too many things on the computer to want to start again, I'm afraid.

Hi gcogger,

How did you install XP? I have been trying for ages and kept getting the "Windows has stopped in order to prevent damage to your computer etc etc etc" message.
I booted from a W98 floppy, removed the Linux partitions, created a DOS partition, formatted it, repaired the MBR and STILL got the error message. Did you flash the BIOS with the Windows BIOS update first?
