Posted: 09-Dec-2008 16:44

Hi,

does anybody know how to change or deaktivate a KNOWN HDD-Password of a Portege M400?

Again: I know the password, but i am bored of typing it every boot.

Hello

As far as I know something like this is not possible. More about HDD password on Toshiba notebooks you can read under

I'm interested in the same matter. In the documents you advice, there is written "removal of the password": in other words, you HAVE NOT the password, but you want to recover all your data.
We are talking about entering the BIOS, going to the "HDD Password" field and then unregister the password which WE HAVE. If you enter the field (Space or Backspace key), you can only enter a new password, but it seems there is no way to unregister the old. If you enter the field, leave it blank and press "Enter" again, all you get is a "Registered" message. I tried almost every key and combination of keys...useless!

It is very strange it is so difficult to unregister a password. In the "password utility" software you can read easily that the user HDD password can be unregistered using BIOS software, but not the BIOS Config Utility under Windows.

So...does anyone know how to unregister this damned password?

Thanks.

P.S. I have a Portegè R500 with HDD. It is not the same, but I think the problem could be solved with the same procedure.

Correct
Here I am, with the solution...

1. The HDD password cannot be removed using Security Assist.
2. Using SETUP BIOS (i.e. start machine; Hold Esc; Press F1), Tab to the HDD Password section which should be displayed as follows:
HDD Password
HDD = Built-in HDD
HDD Password Mode = USER Only
User Password = Registered
3. Tab to the "User Password" field and simply enter the old password and then a new one twice (once to verify) as one would do normally. If you don't want a password, just press "enter" twice

That's all....

Bye
