Hello,

My Satellite Pro A110 crashes while transferring large data through LAN. The LAN driver is a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. I have been searching through this forum and found some thread whit exactly the same problem, the say that the solution is to upgrade Realtek lan board BIOS, not computer's BIOS, but i can not find any link to download the upgrade file needed. Can anybody please tell me where to find this upgrade file or send it to me directly?

Thanks in advanced

I dont think you can update the LAN firmware on laptops.

Your best option would be to update the LAN driver and the laptops' BIOS, and run WindowsUpdate.

Thanks for your reply,

I followed your suggestions: I installed the latest laptop BIOS: V 1.70 and the latest LAN Driver: version 5.688.412.2007, I'm also up to date with windows update but the problem is not solved, I'm really overwhelmed with this problem.

Is this data transfer in company where you work? Do you download some data from the server or how to understand this? How to understand what you mean under “large data”?

Have you tested data download in Internet? For example if you try to download some HD movie trailer (over 200MB)?

Yes, these crashes happen when I copy files over 200MB for example.
I have a LAN connection in my workplace; when I try to copy (also write) a big file (eg 200MB) from a shared folder in another computer my laptop freeze, I have tested even using a direct (crossover network cable) connection with another computer and I have had the same situation.

When you say "Crashes", what exactly happens?

Blue Screen (BSOD)?
Windows exception error message?
Explorer.exe crash?

If you map a network drive to a drive letter, and copy the file in a Command Prompt, does it still crash?
Have you tried disabling your Antivirus and Firewall?

the process that crashes can be explorer.exe (i don't get blue screen or any exception message), the fact is that the computer completely freeze and can't respond to any keyboard input, i can only shut it down by pressing down the power button.

I have tried disabling the antivirus software, i have even uninstalled(not only disable) the windows firewall

I haven't tried to map the network drive and copy the file in a Command Prompt; please take into consideration that the problem doesn't happen always, which is worst for troubleshooting this problem

thanks again for your attention

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem with my Toshiba laptop. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A110-225, bought in the Netherlands in early 2007.

The laptop freezes when large amounts of data are transferred over the LAN network. I get freezes on streaming media from my laptop to my xbox, on heavy peer2peer downloads, or other intensive network data transfers. The freeze simply means: everything is frozen, you can't do a thing except pressing the power button to shut down and restart the laptop. So there are no BSOD, or whatsoever.

I updated my Realtek RTL8139 810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC Driver with the latest version: Windows Xp motherboard_driver_lan_realtek_8111 Version 5.696.0616.2008 Yet, this update did not resolve the problem. I'm a bit wary of updating the BIOS of my laptop, but if that would be the solution I would go for it.

Moreover, the problem does not always occur. There is no pattern, the only thing I know is that it is probably due to heavy network traffic. Though sometimes that will be fine for hours, until suddenly the laptop freezes in the midst of intensive network traffic.

Anybody knows how to solve this very frustrating problem?

Alright, I updated my Toshiba laptop BIOS anyways. Just to check if that would solve the problem.
I updated the phoenixBIOS from version 1.3 to 1.7. However, that did not solve the freeze problem.

Try this:

regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

This will stop Explorer from rendering video files. Some video files can cause explorer's thumbnail renderer to crash.

Unfortunately, that does not solve the problem. It most likely has something to do with the REALTEK LAN controller, since the system freezes on occasion (once or twice daily) when there is more than average network traffic.

In another thread, on the same problem, the problem was supposely fixed by:
"Service solved problem, they sed Update of LAN (RJ45 REALTEK) BIOS not Toshiba bios."
see: http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=93924&#93924
Though I do not know what is meant by "update of LAN BIOS", I could only manage to update the driver of my Realtek LAN controller. Which did not fix the problem. Also an update of the Toshiba BIOS did not fix the problem.

I still wonder where the problem exacatly originates from, and ofcourse how to fix it. All tips and help welcome!

Hi Timothy !

I also checked the thread where the guy says that a LAN BIOS update is required, I have searched a lot for a realtek 8139 firmware update or something like that with no success.

I have found other colleagues with the same problem with these laptops, so I guessed that this problem would be well known by Toshiba’s technicians or other users so would be very easy to solve it, but by the contrary it has become a very difficult and annoying problem for me, I haven’t been able to find a clear solution even though I have spent a lot of time searching through internet for it.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!
Timothy

Hi Oswald,

I'm just about to send my closed Toshiba Authorized Service Provider (ASP) an email with the problem and ask them if they know how to solve it. I will let you know if they come up with something useful.

No, both ASP's did not reply to my email. I'll send out new emails, to more ASP's. Hopefully, they can solve it.

However, I did figure something. I have been experimenting with different drivers for REALTEK Lan. I've downloaded different drivers for different models (8100cl to 8139xx) and tried some of them, to see if it would solve the problem.

I finally ended up with "motherboard_driver_lan_realtek_8111" RTSNT.696 released 2008/06/16.

It did change something, my laptop is now crashing even more often... :-( As soon as I load uTorrent it will crash, and on other network operations it will crash more often too.

Although I'm not happy with this driver, it does point out that the problem might be in the REALTEK lan driver. So I'll try some more drivers, but I don't expect to find the 'perfect' one which solves all the crashes.

I'll keep you posted.
