Hi Sascha,
Sorry if I am a bit vague with this post, but the laptop is at home, and I am at work, so I can't remember the exact messages I get, but here goes anyway!
In answer to your questions:
There would seem to be no issue with the WLAN card driver. It shows up just fine in the device manager. I would say that the chances of it being my router are minimal, as I have tried it on the AP at work that has no encryption (web based sign in hotspot) and it failed to connect as well. I also have a number of machines that connect fine to my router at home (64bit wep only). There are also no mac filters or other access restrictions on either networks.
The client software on the Portege always says that my driver has not been configured each time I start it up. After I add the settings for the particular network it will report that it has connected, but a quick look in ipconfig states that all adapters are disconnected.
I also know that it is not the hardware on the Portege as it runs fine with an ubuntu live cd!!!
I have not tried using Wireless Zero Configuration, as I had completely forgotten that you could on Windows 2000!!! Thank you for the reminder! I will try that this evening when I get back to the laptop, and I'll report my success/failure
Many thanks for the help.
Rob.
