Satellite M35-S456: TouchEd Error - Retrieval of 'Thotkey' failed

My 2004 Satellite M35-S456 laptop gets an error when starting up.
Titled "TouchEd Error," it says:
"Retrieval of 'Thotkey' failed. Error code - 0x00031402, 0x00000002."
I can use my touchpad, but I can't use the Fn button nor Play/Stop/Forward/Rewind buttons on the front edge of the laptop.
What should I do? I've already tried installing the driver for the touchpad again, but it doesnt' work. I did a Norton Antivirus sweep and nothing comes up. I took out hte battery and put it back in. Nothing has worked.
Thanks,

Hi
Where did you found the drivers?
As far as I know this is a US unit and you have to download the drivers form the Toshiba US site.
The touchpad driver is NOT responsible for the FN keys and not for the Toshiba buttons.
You need Toshiba controls to use the buttons. If you want to use the FN keys you will need different drivers like Toshiba hotkey utility to use the FN F5 key combination.
But nevertheless I would recommend using the Toshiba recovery CD to solve this issue.

You are correct - it is a US unit. I found the drivers on the US toshiba website. I actually had downloaded the Thotkey (not touchpad) utility driver from the US website, but it didn't work. I tried it again after you responded. Still didn't work.
I unfortunately don't have the recovery CD with me, so I can't use that to reinstall the driver. What do I do now?

Hi
Possibly some registry entries are damage or something different.
In such case it’s not easy to find a right solution. I think you could use the system restore too to roll back the OS to the early point or you will install the OS again.
Please note: if you will install the Windows from original MS CD you need all Toshiba drivers. The Toshiba drivers must be installed in the right order.
Very important is the installation of the chipset driver and common modules at the beginning.
This is all what I can suggest.
