Installing Win2000 on a Satellite M30X
Posted: 01-Mar-2007 08:29

Hello everybody,

i know that this topic was discussed in 2005, but i can't find the thread. So if someone could help me, this was very appreciated.

My problem: when i tried to start my Laptop yesterday it told me, that a file in folder windows/system32/config was corrupt. I should try to run the Setup-CD an pressing R-key. The problem is, that the bootprocess from the win2000-CD is finished with a blue screen every time.

The old thread told that i had to press a special key, after that a menu apperas where i can choose boot options. But i don't remeber which key it was.
Does anybody know it ?

Thanks in advance from good old Germany

Hi Stefan

By pressing the F12 button the boot menu should appear and you could choose between several booting devices.
Pressing the “C” button allows you also to boot from the internal ODD.

Good luck

Hey Jimi,

i've already tried this. The result was the well known blue screen :-(

I know that there was a combination like <Alt>+<F5> or so, but i don't know the correct combination. I#ve tried all "usual" combinatipons, but nothing helped.

What i want to avoid is that the complete harddisc is formated as one single partition (as it would be if i used the recovery cd). I have installed linux also and this shouldn't be deleted.

I’m a little bit confused.
You can use ALT+F5 in linux if you want to switch to GUI (graphical user interface) and with CTRL-Alt-F2 you can switch back to the text console.
But this works only in Linux and if you boot from the W2k CD you cannot use these options!

By the way: The Toshiba recovery CD supports an expert mode and this mode allows you to choose the partition where the OS should be installed!

Hey Jimi,

the problem is, that i can't boot the win2000-setup-cd without running into a blue screen. This seems to be a known issue, because the satellite m30x was designed to run with XP. To install win2000 it is necessary to boot the laptop in a special mode. This mode can be choosen by a special menu, open by a special key-combination (many "special"s ;-) ). I remember that it was no usual key-combination (such as <Alt>-<F5> ), but it was similar to this.

If it is possible to recover WinXP without destroying the other partitions this would be okay to me (although i don't like XP). I'll try your suggestion and hope this helps.

Neverteless i would like to know the key-combination for this special menu (i've tried the boot options with <F12>, but all i got was a blue screen :-( ).
