Portege R830 - BIOS 3.9 Update Error

Greetings all,

Portege R830-138 Current BIOS 3.7

I am unable to update the BIOS to either 3.8 or the latest 3.9 version. Error: This Computer Is Not Supported.

VAP is installed and modules are working. A previous forum post suggested that it may be related to the recent Intel Management Interface firmware update which I had applied and am unable to uninstall or rollback.

Any suggestions?

Hi

A friend of mine has updated the BIOS from 3.7 to 3.9 without any big problems.
It could be possible that you cannot update the BIOS because of the missing or disabled TVALZ services.

Go to Control panel -> Administrative Tools icon and click services.

Here you can check if the TVALZ service is available … if its available, enable it and then try to update the BIOS.

If this will not work, you will need to recover the notebook using Recovery HDD or Recovery disk… The BIOS update should functions using the Toshiba factory settings

Greetings PauPau amd thank you for your response.

The TVALZ service is not listed and what I understand it forms part of the Windows XP Common Modules but I am running Windows 7.

If the TVALZ service is relevant to Win 7 as well, is there a way to install it?

I would prefer not to recover the notebook if at all possible.

TVALZ is a Toshiba service.
For Win XP its part of Common Modules and for Win Vista or Win 7 its part of the Toshiba Value Added Package.

From my understanding this would mean that Value Added Package does not work properly.
I would recommend uninstalling the old VAP and to download the newest version from Toshiba EU page.
Install this VAP, reboot the unit and check if BIOS update works.

Closure & feedback

Despite a folder for TVALZ being in the .exe archive, I was not able to install the service - I uninstalled the Value Added package, cleaned the file system & registry but to no avail.

I have managed to update the BIOS using the bootable CD ROM method included in the global Toshiba support site.

However, I need to state that I doubt that this method would be endorsed by Toshiba for use in the EMEA region (where I am) so I have done this at my own risk & on the understanding that it would most likely be unsupported.
