Hello Mike,
sad to hear that it didn't work. This procedure solved the problem for me and some other XP-Users in germany under Android 3.1. Now I have 3.2.1 and it is still running (see the picture:

While the connection with usb is not working, what do you think about trying another way? You have some alternatives to do this:
- Transfer files with your wifi-connection. In my opinion this is the easiest way. With the app ES FileExplorer you can do this per drag&drop. The app offers access to your lan, via ftp and webdav. And you have also very easy acces to cloud webspace like dropbox and some others.
- Use the sd-card or an usb-device.
- The connection with win7, vista or ubuntu12.04 works out of the box.
