My Satellite A110-180 do a RAM test always

Hello.

I cannot enable a quick start (start without the RAM test) in my A110-180 laptop. I upgraded my RAM from 1 Gb to 3Gb and I would like to disable the standard ram test when the laptop starts because now becomes very slow. I updated the original Bios HTW20 V1.30 to Bios HTW20 V2.00 but in the new doesn't have this option neither.

Can you help me?.

How something like this can happen?
After RAM upgrade start-up is actually not different as before. Notebooks operations are “faster”.

Can you please tell us which RAM module have you used for upgrade?
I have checked notebook’s specification and compatible RAM modules for your Satellite A110 are:
1GB – PA3411U-1M1G
2GB - PA3513U-1M2G

The laptop has the same behaviour like before with the original RAM modules (512 MBx2) when it start do a test memory and now with more memory (2G + 1G) becomes slower.

Now I have installed two Kingston modules:

2G --> KVR667D2S5/2G
1G --> KVR667D2S5/1G

After the BIOS start the laptop works faster than before but my question is if I can disable the memory test from the BIOS.

Hi

As far as I know this is controlled in BIOS by option called “fast boot”
Access the BIOS pressing F2 and use the option enable/disable.

I would recommend checking the boot speed with enabled and disabled fast boot.
Check if you would notice an difference between two states.

The option to start fast is not available in the latest BIOS for this laptop Phoenix HTW20 V2.00, there is an option to show the test memory or a screen by the TOSHIBA logo but almost spends the same time to start.

Well, in such case it’s not possible to disable this…
Furthermore by fast boot I meant the option which shows Toshiba logo or memory test.

You should also know that the BIOS needs to check the memory always… such test is running automatically and its called POST (power on self test).

So the memory would be checked always… the question is only: do you want to see this on the screen or not…
If you don’t want to see that, enable the Toshiba logo.

The problem is that with Toshiba logo and memory test screen spends almost the same time, about four minutes and after has to start up the operating system is too slow.

What system are u using?
There are two different BIOS versions:
BIOS v2.0 for all operating systems and BIOS v5.40 for Vista 32bit

Would be interesting to know if the same happens using BIOS v5.40
But 4 min are definitely too long time for RAM test.

It could be also possible that this is a RAM related problem..

hi,

I'm using the Windows XP and the Bios V 2.0 the most recent that I found for this operating system in Toshiba's portal. I don't think that it could be a RAM issue because occured the same with the RAM provided with the laptop. If exist a BIOS version that allow to set up a fast boot could be the solution.

After the start up the laptop works fine and fast.

Hey dude, forget the “fast boot” option in BIOS…
Even if such option would be available, this is NOT the reason for such long boot delay…
Even if the fast boot would not be enabled, the notebook should boot up much faster than 4min

Furthermore why do you think its BIOS issue???
If the same happened with the old modules too, then I would think its hardware related issue…
During the POST (power on self test) all parts like keyboard, random access memory, disk drives, and other hardware would be checked… if one of the parts does not work properly, the POST could be longer or could not be passes properly…

Therefore I think one of the parts connected to motherboard (or maybe motherboard itself) is the reason for that…

It's an old topic, but I faced the same problem, with my father's notebook, and it's definitely a BIOS issue. Basically, it checks the memory from byte to byte, which is -in case u have more RAM- a really time consuming process. Newer motherboards just simply disabled and/or fastened up this process.
There should be an option to disable it, but there isn't any :/. I was looking also for some 3rd party bios, but since this is a really old model, no luck.

3rd party BIOS??? Toshiba notebooks use an BIOS which is modified and configured for Toshiba notebooks… Each notebook model supports different BIOS version modified especially for this series…
So flashing ROM module using no compatible BIOS would damage the board for sure…
If the RAM test fails, either the memory modules needs to be replaced or the RAM slots on motherboard are faulty… in such case the board needs to be replaced…

Hi.

I my case the problem has been solved, it could be sounds extrange but it was a mouse issue replacing the mouse or starting the system without a mouse the laptop starts fast, now spends less of a minute.

The model of the mouse with problems is Trust 14831.
In the boot secuence I had the HDD - CD/DVD - FDD - LAN and changing the boot secuence the problem continued definitively it was a hardware issue between the laptop and the usb's mouse.

Regarding your issue I recommend to upgrade the system with the BIOS located in Toshiba's portal only, try to start the system without devices connected and if it continues slow try to start the system with one module with both modules in order to discard memory failures.
