Qosmio X505-Q898 overheats playing StarCraft 2

I got this laptop about 18 months ago, and recently I have run into some serious overheating problems while playing Starcraft 2.

Basically anytime I begin playing (on lowest graphics settings) the CPU (not GPU) temperatures jump from a baseline of about 65 C to 100 C within about 3-5 minutes, every time, and shuts down shortly thereafter.

I have opened up the laptop and cleaned the fans and heat sink with canned air, I am using a cooling pad, and nonetheless this thing is incapable of running SC2 without overheating despite the game requiring only about 10% of the CPU power. Note that the GPU stays pretty cool throughout.

I downloaded Speedfan and have noticed that it doesn't even recognize the computer's built-in fans.

Any ideas?

You can use Toshiba PC Health Monitor to check on the CPU fan,
did you check it in there to see whether it's working or not?

Could it be possible that your cooling modules malfunctions?
The cooling modules should run much faster playing the games since the CPU produce more warmness due to heavy usage.

My first advice: check the BIOS if there is an update. (Toshiba US driver page)
Secondly: check the power saving settings for CPU and cooling modules in Win 7 power options.
The settings in power plant which is used while gaming should be set to more cooling friendly status. The cooling should be set to “performance”.

Of course in such case the notebook would be louder but the CPU should be cooled down much faster.

BIOS is updated. In power settings under Toshiba Power Saver --> Cooling Method is set to Maximum Performance. The problem is on and off, for the past two weeks it's been acceptable, hovering around 85 C while gaming but now it is starting to overheat again. Any other suggestions?

Hi

Did you notice this playing other games?
I read on some gaming pages that playing StarCraft 2 certain screens make your hardware work pretty hard. This seems to be a typical StarCraft 2 problem.

Found some advice to get it solved.
There seems to be a temporary workaround.
Go to your Documents\StarCraft II\variables.txt file and add these lines:
frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60

It could be possible that you need to restart your notebook and game after changing the vcariables.txt file.
