3 displays on Qosmio F750-11U (glasses free 3D)

Hi,

one question I couldn't get answered before buying my F750 is whether I could plug in an external display to HDMI AND VGA.
Now I know: the graphics card can only drive 2 displays, and that means any two. Shame. But I can even "disconnect" the internal display to use 2 larger external displays.

Hope this helps someone somewhere.

Can you please be more specific with your explanation?
Which OS do you use?
Which displays have you connected to your Qosmio notebook?
How you can switch to external displays?
Do you use extended display on them?

Please take a bit time and explain to us how it works.

OS: Win 7 Home Premium

Displays: Fujitsu Siemens L24W-2 which has a DVI and a VGA input. I use an HDMI cable and a HDMI-to-DVI adapter plug to attach this to my Qosmio.

Samsung Syncmaster 204B which I plug into the VGA output of the laptop.

To activate external displays: I plug them in, then on the desktop's background I right-click, choose "Screen resolution" and bingo. You might need to click "Detect". Then it's fairly self-explanatory.

When I've attached the displays and want to switch e.g. to solely internal LCD, I use the Windows shortcut Win+P, but Fn+F5 does pretty much the same in a more long-winded manner.

Yes, I use extended display on them. For programming I find the Qosmio's LCD much too small, and need the area for lots of documents to be open simultaneously.

Hi

Not quite sure what you mean exactly by “disconnect” the internal display but I read about the usage of two external monitors on Qosmio X500 here in this doc:

Choosing the option “HDMI + CRT Extended Desktop” would enable the two external monitors connected to HDMI and VGA but in such case the internal display would be disabled.

However, I’m not quite sure if this would be possible on F750 series

by "disconnect" I mean "Disconnect this display", which is one of the options in the "Screen Resolution" dialog.

However, I’m not quite sure if this would be possible on F750 series

That's because Toshiba disabled the embedded Intel GPU in this model. The notebooks without glasses-free use both GPUs and therefore they should drive three displays simultaneously...

Any idea on what level it was "disabled"? Any chance of a tweak or a firmware upgrade?

I also thought about that, regardless of the loss of warranty, but I'm quite sure that's way to difficult for regular users (or even developers). To my knowledge, it requires "only" two BIOS tweaks: One to simply enable the device and one to activate NVidias Optimus technology in order to have both GPUs work seemlessly together.

Besides the fact that this could enable the use of three displays, it would also unlock some features which are restricted to be used on the i7-GPU, like Intel Wireless Display and QuickSync (which should do video transcoding somehow faster that using CUDA).

It's funny that even Toshiba thought, the Intel GPU was enabled: On some of their websites in Europe, Optimus was even advertised for all F750 models. Now they have added a footnote explaining that this only applies to the non-glasses-free model

Thanks. Maybe Toshiba will provide new drivers.
Does anybody here know if Toshiba actually reads this forum?

To answer my own question in an unexpected way: perhaps there is a way to have 3 displays - just not the built in one.
I used my favourite search enging to look up the text "usb hdmi adapter" and was amazed that € 50 seems to get you a connector for yet another display. Or several of them if you want. Wow!
Has anyone tried this?
Since I have a big 3D TV next to my main PC screen I would plug that in...

Nice idea ... but forget watching video or play games with this. The bandwidth is way to low for this.
I have yet to try USB 3.0 adapters but I'm quite sure they will perform better, at least for watching videos or viewing 3D content.

Just as a side note: I doubt Toshiba will ever release a driver (or better said: BIOS update) to use the internal GPU. Configuration of the entire Glasses-Free chain would be too complicated for the regular user. Keep in mind that Intel's GPUs don't support 3DVision and therefore, you would only be able to use the 3D mode with an enabled NVidia GPU.
