The laptop was not purchased from Toshiba but it is being fixed under warranty by Toshiba. The UK warranty is collect and return basis so all I had to do was package it up safely.
Call Toshiba support directly and they will manage the process.

Steve,

Thanks for the reply, I have just done as you said and they are coming to take it away and look at it.

I just dont understand how they released the laptops like this in the first place, surely the noise would crop up in QA testing.

Lets hope they can do something to sort this out as other than the fine I really like the machine and has made my life a lot easier workwise.

I will post back on here when I get it back, they quoted 10 working days.

I agree. It baffles me how QA let it through and I wonder if they "chanced" it so as to not lose out on the influx of ultrabooks?

I am quite a supporter of Toshiba as I believe they produce excellent business machines and have very good support backup. I have an R700 and a Tecra (both only 10 months old) .

The R700 fan can be a bit high pitched when pushed but never causes me an issue.
Its' an I3 but only 1.2kg so great for my 3 mile hike in London.
The tecra although twice the weight of the R700 and far more powerful is sooooo quiet even when maxed out :-)

However, its 1.99 kg. So along comes this ultrabook with all the ports I need, as I run dual screen and ethernet, and also it has a powerful I7 processor and large memory, 3g, backlit keyboard, TPM module, as light as a feather for travel and then you get the PESKY FAN BUZZ!!!

Such a let down I wonder if someone was "avin a larf"
I really hope that they can sort this and we both get back a nice quiet fan with just the "woooosh" one would expect of air being blown out under pressure on a quality unit. If they can then I think they will corner in particular the business market. If it still buzzes then :-( sales of Goods act here we come.

Hello,

Any news regarding the fan noise?
I can surely say that on newer models the noise has gone away.
I have an Z830-10H with fan noise and 2 newer (Z830-10F) that without the annoying noise.

Also, I have mine at toshiba warranty - they change the cooler and is the same...

Hi

When you say "Also, I have mine at toshiba warranty - they change the cooler and is the same..." have you had it back yet and does it make the same buzzing noise as before or is it now quiet?

Mine has been repaired and I contacted Toshiba this morning and they said "replaced cooling unit" rather than just fan (which we know would make no difference as it is not the fan itself). I did press the gentleman as to whether it was a new type of cooling unit to the original but he had no information. He did say that the laptop was run for a full day to test out the unit so that made me wonder if it is a new design as they would not need to test the old design again??

Mine is due back to me on Monday so I will report back once tested.

Z830 received back from Toshiba and repair note actually states "Fan Exchanged"
Started up laptop and as soon as fan kicked in - no improvement, buzzing just the same as before.
No option now but to do as the Toshiba service gentleman sugested if there was no improvement and that is to go back to retailer and request a full refund under the sales of goods act as item not fit for purpose.
Shame really as I had hoped Toshiba would take the opportunity with all the negative press to fix the problem.
Paul, let us all know how your repair goes in case you "get lucky".

Steve,

Laptop is currently at their service centre, so as soon as i have it back i will be able to let you know what has happened.

Hopefully the fan noise has been reduced.

From what i can gather the unit needs software that will allow the fan to spin at lower RPM to cool the system permanently as it produces a fair amount of heat where the cooling unit is located. So constant low rpm cooling should allow the fan to spin slower with less noise.

Currently it seems to spin to maximum when it peaks above a set parameter and stays on until it drops. The noise this generated is just unbearable to listen to on any occasion. Let alone when in meetings or presentations like I am on a regular basis.

If nothing has been resolved as far the noise goes, then I will also be looking for a full refund and moving to another brand. I like the idea of ultrabooks very much so will be reading the reviews of the alternatives while i wait for the repair process to complete.

Have you had a date for return of your unit yet?
Have tried to update you but just keep getting a profanity warning and wont post message - absolutely no profanity as I dont believe in it in posts so am feeling some cencoring going on.
Anyway, my retailer advised me that Toshiba told them to change the power setting to hitgh performanace to make fan run continuosly as that should stop the buzzing. As BIOS 1,6 was to stop the fan due to its noise then am I missing something?

Some additional info to above post as after all the failures to post I ran out of time on the train.
I did try the power setting change and set the power option to High Power and CPU Minimum State to 100% and the fan only started up when required so could not get it to run continuously.

As the fan is noisey whether running slow or fast then I am still unconvinced that just controlling the fan speed will remove the buzzing sound.
If this was the solution then it conflicts with the implementation of the BIOS 1.6 update.

Am concerned that Toshiba are not acknowlodging this problem properly and is impacting my current business policy of Toshiba as a preferred supplier for laptops.
After purchasing 4 Toshiba laptops this scenario is impacting my view of what I thought was their excellent customer support

Hi Steve,

According to the "Toshiba Service Status" page, my repair has been done so the unit should be on its way back to me in the next couple of days.

I had done all of the steps to try and get the fan to work better. The setting in the bios were as they suggested they should be so nothing to change there.

I had even removed the Toshiba software that controls the fan settings to see if the inbuilt windows settings could do a better job. It was just the same.

Bios 1.6 just turned the fan off until a certain temp is reached then it spins up the fan to max to bring the temp down. This is even worse in my opinion as the noise is so great and so unpredictable that it is such as disturbance in meetings.

The fan needs to be on at all times to keep the unit cool, but it needs to be set to work at a lower RPM as this should reduce the noise generated by the air flow through the cooling unit. I have a feeling though that regardless of RPM the noise will persist due to poor fan quality, or poor airflow design. One of these must be causing the noise.

If the fans they are using are this noisy then a new one may not do anything as people have mentioned. From this the Laptop is floored from day one. Not impressed with that one bit.

Will post again on return of the unit.

Of course it does make the same buzzing noise as before!
It is annoying as hell to work with this unit!

It was sent twice under warranty and now I'm writing on it. The same noise!!
I ask them not to change the cooler, but to change the entire cooling system.
I ask them also to change the case:)

An interesting fact: the part number of the Z830-10H (buzzing unit) case is different from the part number of the Z830-10F/10D.

Anyway, because I did some tweaking to the old cooler (to work from 50 to 20%) they said that my laptop is no longer under warranty... Even so, after enough arguing, they changed only the cooler.

HEY TOSHIBA!!! CHANGE OUR F... NOTEBOOKS!! FIRE YOUR ULTRABOOKS DESIGNERS!

My case first escalated to UK head office who have now escalated to Japan. No obvious solution forthcoming so far.
Await with interest as to whether yours is quieter or the same

b400015 - we feel your pain :-(
Interesting your note about the part number of the Z830-10H (buzzing unit) case is different from the part number of the Z830-10F/10D. I've heard that the fan itself is silent when out of the unit. Must be something to do with the fan mounting causing the case to reverbarate. Wonder whether if Toshiba added a rubber mount it would solve it?

I have had the unit back, it has by all accounts had a part swapped out. what that is i don't know as the documentation is very poor that has come back with the unit.

The noise produced by the fan during cooling is still the same, it is just far too intrusive

The fact the fan is off until a temperature is reached, or comes on during load is fine if the noise this caused wasnt so loud.

A laptop of this value should be whisper quiet. The only time this occurs is when the fan is off.

I have totally lost my patience with this laptop now, i am disappointed with the toshiba repair process. I was given instructions to bubble wrap and box up the laptop before shipping, which i did. On return of the unit i found it loose in the box with no protective wrapping. Based on the distance the unit had to travel I find this unacceptable.

I will be calling the company who i bought the machine from to see what their refunds process is. As i just cant put up with said noise in a quiet office environment.

I will also be contacting toshiba customer support to let them know of my dissatisfaction.

I just cant get my head round how this has been overlooked during production and testing. Its down right embarassing.

If future models dont address this issue, I wont be coming back to Toshiba anytime soon.

This post has been marked Assumed answered the moderator. Erm, it's not answered. Far from it.

Nothing at all is running on my brand new Toshiba Satellite Z830 and the fan is CONTINUALLY at 48%. It's not stopped now for about an hour. I have the most up-to-date BIOS and I have tried various different power settings including amending the BIOS and still the same.

Why does the fan jump from zero to 48% and remain at 48%?! What about 1% through to 47%?!

The BIOS is clearly faulty and needs another fix so the fan does not always stay at 48%!!!
