Hey everyone,

I recently moved to windows 7 64-bit about 2 weeks ago. I've been busy so i havn't had the time to play games since now im not that busy anymore i decided to install call of duty modern warfare 2. It was all going great till about after 30 minutes, the laptop gets really hot and just turns off a few minutes later. Now that i think about it, when i had vista 64-bit installed it NEVER had this problem. It heats up but does not turn off. it never turns off. I've looked around google the american site for toshiba and people says that in windows 7, the fan doesnt run as good?

when i had vista installed, i had the graphics up to high and now even in low it heats up and turns off . I switched to windows 7 because i thought it would make the computer less lag but then if it keeps turning off like this then it feelsl ike i just spent $100+ on something i shouldnt have done

Anyone else had any problem like this one?
any help would be appreciated and i think if there are alot of other alternatives, i wouldnt switch back to vista since it would be a pain isntalling everything again.

Hi,

Before to start a long discussion, clean the cooling module of your laptop:

Hi Ciphere,

As you know, modern games need a lot of CPU and GPU power and therefore you need good cooling modules.

So maybe it’s a lot of dust in your notebook so you must clean it using compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators and this takes only 5 minutes as described in this article:
How to clean the cooling system of a Toshiba notebook?

Another important point is that you are using Toshiba display driver because they have an overheat protection.
What display driver is currently installed?

Thanks for the reply

the laptop has ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650

and about the whole cleaning it up, do i have to open up the laptop and spray it? or do i just spray in the holes underneath the laptop?

thing is, it does not overheat when it was with vista, it only started when i switched to windows 7. When i switched to windows 7 games that dont usually make my laptop turn off has been shutting it down when the computer heats up. Lets say world of warcraft. i used to play that from morning till night time, during summer too reaching about 30+ inside the house. i switched to windows 7 around winter so its been a cold weather and inside the house is cool aswell since i dont run heaters. next thing u noe, the whole system shuts down because it overheats and in winter too.

but i guess i'll give the dusting it off a try, just need to know if i have to open it up or spray in the holes

again thanks for the reply

no, you don't need to open it up, just blow air gently and shortly trough the holes of the case of the machine where the air flows trough. This removes the dust from the cooling components and frees the way for the flowing air which keeps the system components cool.

Hi siphere, yup u are on the money! i have a Tosh A350 laptop.I have the exact same over-heating problem, even down to running vista before, being cooler for games, now running windows7 now over-heating.
I'll be trying to go through bios maybe and higher the cut out temp which i heard the cpu's can handle up to 100c but apparently bois will cut out within 85-90c automatically,or get a temp program if it cant been done through bios.

Done quote me on this but u can get a cooling mat i hear too?

Before you try to remove the temperature protection and possibly damage your laptop in the process, you might try some of these tricks...

Reduce the stress on the drivers by reducing DPC latency in the whole machine. Even a few % decrease could help to stop from cutting out, though if the game is totally beyond the performance of the machine there may be little you can do.

DPC latency (e.g. from LAN, Wi-fi or bluetooth drivers) can cause a few extra % on CPU stress when the CPU is already maxed out gaming and can cause stuttering/crackling video/audio during games and other multi-media applications even when the CPU is idle.

Run this tool to find out which drivers have a problem:
http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

Also, go to task manager->performance->resource monitor to see if there are any unrequired processes or services using lots of CPU % that you can uninstall. This will help to improve performance of windows 7 in general.

Every bit of CPU time counts when gaming.

If that fails you could run in "balanced" power plan instead of "high performance" as that may auto-switch between modes when the CPU becomes hot. Obviously you may not get as good performance though.

It is the drivers that set the cut-out temperature. Toshiba drivers have temperature protection built in.

Maximum temperature differs from processor to processor. Although the TjMax for the Core 2 Duo P8600 and Core 2 Duo T6400 is 105C, the TjMax for the Core 2 Duo T5800 is only 85C.

These are maximum temperatures for the core at which the core itself will shut-down to protect itself from damage.

These processor cores are NOT designed to be run for LONG times at over 85-90C. It's not just the CPU you have to think about protecting but all the components on your motherboard as well.

The lower you keep the temperature the longer the life of the laptop will be.

You could try changing the fan settings, although you don't want to wear this component out either.

Finally, low-end laptops are not designed for high-end gaming. Even if the processor is the same gaming laptops have better cooling systems.

Windows 7 64bit most probably uses more ram than Vista, that along with the fact which has been told to you that your GPU isn't up to the task of playing COD2 well in the first place.

You probably have the CPU & ram gadget under "gadget" in control panel , put it on your desktop and when you start a game don't play in full screen so you can see how much CPU & ram you're using, I bet your maxing out your ram.

There are some major thing to be aware of when using air duster/compressed air on computers./

The obvious one is power, power should be off and preferably the battery taken off so you cant accidentally turn it on, most air dusters are flammable so be careful.

The one that gets missed the most is the fans issue, Most fans have a maximum spin up speed, Old fans obviously have worn bearings. When subjected to a blast from an air duster the fans can spin up beyond their safe spec and bearings can get damaged etc, Bottom line is never to direct air duster onto a moveable fan in a computer. To air dust the fan safely immobilise it by using something inobtrusive to stop the fan spinning whilst you spray/dust the fan.

I tend to use a wooden toothpick placed just between two blades of the fan, but a match stick or something that will not damge or push the blades in should be fine.

I've replaced many fans for customers taht have DIY cleaned with air duster and fans not worked afterwards.

The other thing that has been mentioned but should be highlighted is where you use the laptop. all laptops have very small "feet" at each corner to allow airflow around them to vents etc. When you plut a laptop on any surface where the feet are not able to hold it clear, i.e. on your lap, on carpet, on bed etc then the vents are blocked and the system overheats quickly.

I find that a fairly inexpensive cushioned lap tray with a solid surface works great for me.
