Does Qosmio X500 Support a Seagate 1Tb HDD?
Posted: 08-Apr-2012 05:56

Hi,

I am considering replacing my second HDD with a Seagate CFonstellation.2 HDD with a 1 Tb Capacity.

I have not seen if it is compatable, but it is only a relatively new HDD.

Part of my concern is that the new Seagate HDD is 13 MM thick as opposed to the existing HDD's which are only 11 MM thick.

Does anyone have any opinions?

Cheers
Macius

According specification HDD height 9.5 mm but I think 13mm should not be problem. I think there is a bit free space and it should work.

In my opinion you should order this HDD and test it. If there is some problem send it back.

It will be nice if you can send some feedback. This can be useful info for other Qosmio X500 owners.

Thank you Macius,

I have to be a little careful here as apparantly under the warranty, only an authorised Service Centre can change the HDD or it will invalidate my warranty.

I will see what I can find out further and I will update this post when I have a yes or a no answer.

Thanks again

HDD and RAM upgrade can be done by notebook owner. I’m not sure but how it must be done is also explained in user’s manuals document. On this forum page (user self replacement) you can also find short movies how it can be done. Warranty will not be cancelled.

Just be careful how you do it.

Well done some trying, with no sucess.

Rang Toshiba Technical Support and while they could not confirm that the constallaton.2 1 TB 2.5 inch HDD would work with the Qosmio X500, They did confirm that the Qosmio wouldwork with a 1 TB HDD. So there is no restriction via BIOS.

So back to searching.

Ine site had the answer, the Constallation.2 is apparantly an "enterprise" level HDD, and will not work in most laptops because:
1. It has a 12V power requirement where as mose laptops only supply 5 V to the HDD (or so it is claimed).
2. The Dive is bigger that the space generally allowed. which is said to cause a number of problem including strain on the case & heat disappation.

That these limitation rule out most laptops even thouse only a few yesrs old, you would wonder why retailer would market it as a laptop HDD?

Still, the Constallation.2 is going back to the shop and will be swapped for a Western Digital or even the Toshiba 1 Tb version.

Usually it should not be a problem using 1TB HDD. The SATA controller will support this and if there is no restriction in BIOS, you should be able to get it working…

Feedback would be appreciated..

Sorry,

I though my last post above was clear, so I have not been back for a while. The problem was not that the Toshiba could not handle a 1TB HDD, it can. Its just thet the Seagate Constallation 2 HDD while marketed by some people as a laptop drive, it is actually an enterprise HDD and intended for servers, not laptops.

Its power requirements are 12V as opposed to what a laptop can provide of 5V. Hence the =constallation HDD would not power up, hence could not be recognised by BIOS.

I have subsequently bought a WD 1 TB HDD, which worked without a problem.
