Qosmio X770 - Function buttons have stopped working
Posted: 16-May-2012 13:03

The function buttons on my X770 have stopped working.
The function keys and flash cards are OK. The problem started around the same time as a BIOS upgrade came out but I can't be 100% sure that that is exactly when the buttons stopped working.

Other users have posted the same problem but I could not find a fix for this issue in any previous posts.

Does anyone have an answer?
Is it as simple as the buttons being disabled by some software setting that has been inadvertently changed and is there a way of finding the actual state of the software settings for the buttons?

Thank You
PauPau

Hi

You mean the multimedia buttons near the power button?
Well, these buttons are controlled by VAP (value added package).

Uninstall the old package, reboot the notebook, download the latest available VAP from Toshiba driver page and install it

Should work!

I have removed the VAP and reinstalled a copy downloaded from the Toshiba website. No joy, the download was the same file as was already on the computer but I tried a new copy anyway, as well as reinstalling the old. The VAP also controls the flash cards which continue to work. The idea that the VAP was the cause was suggested previously to other users with this problem. To date, there has not been an answer to fix this problem. Anyone have a proven fix?

I would like to try to revert to the previous BIOS. Can someone tell me how to do this and where to find the current BIOS and the previous BIOS details?

Unfortunately you will not be able to find old BIOS version on Toshiba download page. Only Toshiba service partner in your country can obtain it for you so if possible make a call and ask if you can have it.

What you can try now is to reinstall recovery image and test functionality with “factory settings”.
I know, it is not the best solution but worth to try it.

I have taken the computer back to the first system restore point but the problem remains. I've had this computer for a week and already I have to do a full install. This is not an acceptable solution. Others have had this problem, someone must have managed to fix it without reinstalling their entire drive. If there is no answer, then the answer is to get my money back.

Helpful
actually its pretty easy to obtain any earlier bios version

i.e. this is the link to the newest bios for my qosmio x770
http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/sby5v170.exe

if you would like to obtain the first ever bios which was 1.10 simply change the download file name to:
http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/sby5v110.exe

voilla. thanks to MaciusPL (i hope im remembering his nickname correctly)

as for the media keys, have you been messing about in your msconfig configuration? mine stopped working after i had turned off all of the toshiba rubbish processes. but i couldnt care less, i dont use these buttons except for the volume, which work perfectly fine without the drivers

I was using Msconfig to stop Scansoft programs from running because of an anoying update popup on startup. I have deleted the programs now and Msconfig is set to normal startup with all programs starting. The buttons still do not work, not even the volume buttons. I have downloaded the old BIOS file, thankyou, and will give that a go after a little research to make sure that it is simply a case of running the file.

After my research, I did the following:

I ran msinfo32 to check my BIOS against the Toshiba website to check that mine was the latest. The update that my computer made a few days ago was to V1.4 but the BIOS on the site was 1.7 as per blobs post. I downloaded it, held my breath and hit enter. The update ran and at the end of it, my buttons are functioning again, problem solved. I can only guess that the update that came up automatically was not for my computer.
