Same for me, bought a Z830-10J and the fan is just unbearable.

I began to look at the comments on amazon.de, and most users report the same.

I ve paid nearly a 1000 EUR for that and I fly to Africa in 2 days, with no possibility to return the laptop...
ANY HELP IS WELCOME !!!!

Hi BM

Sorry but I cannot say more than other forum members. What I can say is that maybe Toshiba will offer some BIOS update soon that will fix this cooling fan issue.

If I’m remembering well in the past Toshiba has done the same for few notebook models.
From time to time check Toshiba download page to see if new BIOS version is available.

Good luck.

Hi Pedro,

do you really believe they will offer a BIOS update althought the email support team is still denying that there is a problem?

I mean, when they say, we see no problem, I highly doubt that they will look into this. Why should they?

Guys, a bios update will not solve your fan noise problem.
It is not the cooler that have a problem, it is the case of the notebook. Check my posts where I'm explaining this.

I have to add some of the problems I encountered after operating inside z830 ultrabook:

1. Reducing the speed of the cooler bring me silence. Also bring me annoying "cooling fault" messages. I uninstall some of the toshiba monitoring tools and now is ok.

2. Reducing the cooler speed will reduce dramaticaly the whole computer speed (cpu, video, ram and probably the sdd - which by the way - is sata 2 and very slow comparing with asus zenbook). I solved this by clicking the "Always High" option inside bios - dynammic CPU frequency mode!

3. Radomly putting the 13+1 scr ews in place on the back of the notebook will bring you another annoying issue: the front left part of the notebook will be 1-2 mm rised - when the lid is up more than 90 degrees. I mean you can insert a shit of paper under the left side...This is annoying when typing. When the lid is closed - the back right side will be rised.

The solution will be to find the proper scheme of putting the screws back.
There should be a diagram about this. (I have this diagram for the last 4 new Satellite Pro R850-122 laptops that I bought - every single one of them had this issue. And because of the laptop move when typing, also the hdd inside entered in protection mode.

This is not the case with Z830 SSD)

I just bought one as well, and the fan noise makes it pretty much unusable. It wouldn't be so bad if the BIOS would not run the fan when it isn't needed, but the constant buzz / whine sound in a quiet room is really annoying. I think my laptop is going back to the store.

I bought 1 Z830 last week. Fan sound was so horrible, I thought it was an issue and I brought it back to the store and asked for a new one.
As the second Z830 had the same horrible fan sound, I realized I just spent 1.000 € for a PC I just want to get rid off when I use it !!!
So I asked all my family members, all my friends, all my colleagues to tell me if they thought the fan sound was normal, and the answer was already the same : no, this sound it just horrible

Damn, I whish I had bought a macbook air .. I am just taking a few days to see if Toshiba is going to find a solution with a bios update and in the meantime, I am going to publish a much feedbacks as I can on online store just to warn future customer of this issue.

Probably first and last time I buy Toshiba...

For sure the last time I purchased a toshiba product - and it is not only me.
And not only because of this horrible noise, but because of the fact that Toshiba does not care about their customers - neither by email nor here in the forum... never been so disappointed

New firmware 1.60. Now the fan remains off and turns on only when needed. The noise problem is because it was a hardware problem! Very disappointed, for this patch is not much for a brand like toshiba! Shall I sell my z830 ..... unfortunately!

Correct
Hi

I found this Toshiba knowledge base article regarding the fan activity on Z830 series.
Improved FAN control on the Satellite and Portégé / Satellite Z830 series
http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/FAQ22039H0002R01.htm

It seems Toshiba has improved the fan control by new BIOS update and this should help to solve this issue

In order to improve the FAN control on the Satellite and Portégé / Satellite Z830 series, please update the BIOS to V1.60 or higher

Hello,

is there any option to install the bios update from a linux system or some kind of live system?

Hey there,

I just bought the new Z830 K version, and I am also very disappointed. The fan sound is horrible! I even have the 1.60 BIOS preinstalled. Cannot work with this sound! Is there any feasible solution possible?

I would be glad for support by every user who has the same problem. The more people get on the nerves of Toshiba support, the higher the chance they try to solve the problem.

Hopefully, there is a solution. Still thinking aboutt exchanging it in favor of the Asus Zenbook...

@ ScoobyDoo84

Read the last message posted by Paolo.
There is a link to Toshiba document and BIOS update has solved this (improved the fan behavior). In my case it worked.
Should also read my early message in this thread about recommended power management settings!

I have just sent back my z830-11J to Toshiba after being in a very tense meeting last week when the fan kicked in resulting in stares by the other participants and frowns and I had to shut down the machine. As a consultant this was highly embarrassing. The fan noise is not so noticeable in a noisy environment but in a quiet situation with only a few people it is highly intrusive.

I have the top spec unit due to the need for the power and the BIOS update is fine for those who only need low level processing. My work places a demand on the machine that it can cope with but results in the fan on almost continuously. It also means I need to have it in balanced mode not eco mode.

I contacted Toshiba as the unit is otherwise ideal and in case they had a fix.
They have taken the unit in to look at. When I first contacted them last week they said they did not know of the issue.

However after I advised them that there were many links to people complaining about this issue the gentleman spoke to some other people and came back and said that Toshiba now "recognised the fan issue". He advised that if there was no fix then I would have to go back to the supplier and state that under the sales of goods act the item is not fit for purpose.

However, at least the supplier could not say that the unit needed repair as Toshiba would have already done that.
So I am now awaiting their report.

It is a shame as the unit is perfect in all other matters but at nearly 1500 pounds and the embarrassment of last week I am not prepared to accept this flaw.

Repair Status is showing "waiting for parts". Does this mean there is a solution to the noisy fan problem now? I wait with bated breath :-)

I have a Z830 also, had it about a month now. It spins up the fan so loud every now and again it is becoming unbearable to work with.

SteveP95 did you purchase your machine direct from toshiba, or have got toshiba to have a look at it under warranty?

I will be ringing Toshiba about this to see if they can take a look at mine, as something needs to be done about this.
