Satellite Z830 Bios update: "This computer is not supported"
Posted: 10-May-2012 15:09

Hi,

I replaced the preinstalled Windows with a Fedora 16 installation, - which works perfectly btw - and was hoping
to solve the "Windows Only Bios Update Problem" with a bootable Windows 7 USB Stick, which again works
great so far, but the BIOS160_EC130_WIN.exe just says: "This computer is not supported." ...

Any ideas appreciated.

Hi

You cannot update the BIOS running Linux and using an win – based BIOS version.
You will need to use the Toshiba preinstalled image.

so maybe I did not make it clear but the point definitely is I booted Windows 7 on the Z830, and of course I
started the BIOS update software while running Windows 7, so the question is: what exactly is that BIOS
update utility expecting to see to accept that it's the correct hardware to do the job it's supposed to do.
What is missing, how does it know that this is not the original Window preinstallation ?

Did you install the VAP (value added package) for Win 7 which can be found on Toshiba driver page?
Do this since the VAP contains some essential components to run BIOS update or other Toshiba tools.

Correct
I found the simple solution:

after unzipping bios-20120215103822.zip and uncompressing BIOS160_EC130_WIN.exe using 7zip (7z
under linux) you will find that CHGBIOSF.EXE is an MS-DOS executable and BIO0081T.COM is the BIOS file.

The rest is obvious ...
