Satellite C850/074 - question about DVD Region Code limitation
Posted: 09-May-2012 05:41

I live in Western Australia (DVD Region Code 4). I have just bought a Satellite C850/074. I inserted a DVD (The Bourne Identity). Message:
"This DVD cannot run because your DVD Region Code is 4 and the Region Code for the DVD is 2."

There is a procedure by which the Region Code can be changed from 4 to 2, but this can only be done 4 times. After the 4th change the DVD Region Code remains the Code inserted for the 4th change.

I had this problem with a DVD player I bought over 10 years ago. I changed my old DVD by finding a code procedure on the net which allowed the Region Code to be changed to Region Code 0, which plays all DVDs.

Since then I've purchased two Pioneer DVRs which play all DVDs regardless of Region Code.
I thought that this ancient thinking was a thing of the past. Now I find that Toshiba appears to be out of touch with curent DVD playing equipment.

Is there any method by which the Region Code can be changed to Region Code 0 which plays all Region Codes?

This Toshiba laptop does not offer a method of changing the number: it offers a choice of country, which continues to limit the DVDs that can be played and the number of changes to 4.
Help please

No, there is no method which would allow you to change this settings always.

Of course you can find many different tips in the world wide web how to overcome such settings but I would not recommend trying this. In most cases people say that an firmware update is needed but an usage of such incompatible firmware would damage the CD/DVD drive…so its definitely not recommended.

It looks as if I'm going to answer my own question.

A Popular Mechanics article dated 1 Aug 2008 headed "How to unlock DVD Regions on your...PC (how-to/tips/427427) recommended the free downloading of either Remote Selector 2.2 or VLC, both of which were described as circumventing the region encoding.

As I have VLC installed on my main computer and have used it very successfully for years without any problem, I decided to download VLC on to my Toshiba.

Having installed it, I then selected the E drive containing my DVD, right-clicked the drive icon, and selected "Open using VLC"

The DVD ran with no probem at all!!!
Certainly no request to change the Region Code.

Very happy.
