Satellite U500-18P memory leak
Posted: 02-May-2012 18:22

I have Satellite U500 18P PSU8CE with preinstalled Windows7 Home Premium x64 with 4GB RAM. When I start it in Safe mode then memory does not leaked. When I start it in Normal mode then nonpaged kernel memory grows up to 3011 MB (~ after 4 days running).

I have downloaded poolmon.exe and found growing pool tag: 'AmlH' (ACPI AMLI Pooltags). In Safe mode this pool has only 1 allocation unit. In Normal Mode ~ every 73 sec it is allocated new unit. Size of each unit is 524288 bytes.

Then I have downloaded and installed the "Windows Performance Toolkit" and run xperf.exe and xperfview.exe according to

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/maartenb/archive/2010/12/07/debugging-pool-leaks-with-x-perf.aspx.

xperfview shows stack for memory leak as

Root/ntkrnlmp.exe! KxStartSystemThread/ntkrnlmp.exe! PspSystemThreadStartup/ACPI.sys! ACPIWorkerThread/ACPI.sys! RestartCtxtPassive/ACPI.sys! InsertReadyQueue/ACPI.sys!RunContext/ACPI.sys!ParseTerm/ACPI.sys! Return/ACPI.sys!DupObjData/ACPI.sys!NewObjData/ACPI.sys!HeapAlloc/ACPI.sys! NewHeap/ntkrnlmp.exe!ExAllocatePoolWithTag

I have restored windows to factory state but memory leak still present.

Looks like it may be a driver or OS problem.

Do you have Win7 Service Pack 1 installed?

I had Service Pack 1 installed (and all other relevant updates from Microsoft, Intel and Toshiba) but memory leaked anyway.

Memory leaks are a common error in programming.
memory leak, occurs when a computer program consumes memory but is unable to release it back to the operating system.

In your case it would be necessary to know what application or process which is running in the background do that…
This can be really long process… you would need to install an fresh system and would need to check the memory leak after each installation of driver or other application…

I did just you wrote. I use my notebook not often and when I have understood that memory leaked then I have reinstalled OS but memory leaked even with factory state of my notebook.

I see many posts in this forum about U500. Does memory leaked only on my U500??

Memory leak does not depend on hardware but software… I used the search option in this forum but didn’t find any other threads about memory leak.

I have installed clean (i.e. by Microsoft, not preinstalled by Toshiba) Windows7 and the memory leak disappeared. I tried to uninstall all Toshiba specific software (and drivers) from preinstalled version but not yet successful: memory still leaked.

And I tried to install all Toshiba drivers over clean Microsoft version and unsuccessful too: memory does not leaked. It is very difficult to find the cause of memory leak because I can not compare this two version simultaneously.

To reload another version I need boot my notebook from third OS and rename some directories like Windows, Program Files, Users ...

How can I extract preinstalled Toshiba software (and drivers) from my factory installation (HDDRecovery dir's *.SWM files?) to try it on clean Windows7?

From my experience this is not possible… you can download all drivers and toshiba tools from the Toshiba driver page… these are the same apps like included in the image.

Hello, All.

I have found the cause of the memory leak. When I modify installed features for "TOSHIBA Value Added Package" and uncheck "Flash Cards" then memory not leaked anymore . To uncheck this feature I need also uncheck all other unchechable features ("Utilites", "PC Diagnostic Tool", "Power Saver", "Button Support" and "Zooming Utility").

I have tested two versions - original russian 1.2.26.64 and the last english 1.2.32.64 with same effects.

Thanks for the feedback.
Conclusion is: don’t play too much with original Toshiba stuff. ;)
